[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] W Ellington, Friday. MINISTERIAL MOVEMENTS. The Minister of Public Works is heard of from Pahiatua, where he is receiving deputations. Some of the deputations complain of the condition of the roads in the district. Sir Patrick Buckley has gone to Wanganui. Telegrams received from tho Premier state that his health is still improving. THE CHEVIOT ESTATE. Mr. H. D. Bell, one of the trustees for this estate, has interviewed the Minister of Lands in roferonce to tho taking over of tho estate. Certain arrangements were agreed to The country will be leased subject to the reservation of the homestead and grounds. The station buildings will be included in the lease or leased separately. The lease is to be put up to auction. The estate will be handed over probably on the lsb of May, when the lessee will take possession. There is a clause reserving the right of the Government to resume possession of agricultural land estimated at 30,000 acres. The. estate has not been surveyed. A topographical survey and triangulation will be made and the land cut up into blocks to be ready for disposal about October next. SURVEY DEPARTMENT. It is rumoured that Mr. Percy Smith, the Surveyor-General, will shortly retire from the public service, and that he will be succeeded by Mr. Baker, tho present Crown Lands Commissioner in Wellington.
