THE ALAMEDA. " Tbe mail steamer Alameda, Captain H. & Morse, arrived in harbour about half-past 11 o'clock yesterday morning from San Franoisoo. Honolulu, and Apia, bringing the English and American mails. The steamer was three days late in leaving San Francisco, owing to the Atlantic steamer being behind time, owing to meeting with heavy weather on the trip across. Mr. J. B. Sutton, the purser, to whom we are indebted for our files and despatches, reports that the Alameda discharged the San Francisco pilot on the 9th Inst., at 4.30 p.m., and reached Honolulu at 9.30 a.m. on the 16th. After discharging cargo, she left at 10.50 o'clock the same night, and stopped off Apia at 7 a.in. on the 23rd. After a stay of a little over four hours, the voyage was resumed, and the Auckland pilot was taken on board at 11.15 a.m. yesterday, the steamer berthing at the Queen-street Wharf shortly afterwards. For the first three days from San Francisco strong gales from the S.E. and N. were encountered; thence fine weather and smooth sea to arri- **!•, The time occupied on the passage was 19 days 23 hours, 26 minutes. Mr. Thomas F. peering, formerly second officer, now occupies the position of chief, taking the place of Oar. Thomas Dowdell, who was seriously injured on the last trip of the steamer up to San Francisco. AMERICAN SHIPPING. In their circular dated December 31, Messrs. R. W. Forbes and Sons, of New York, report as follows:—Freight*: Sail charters are a trifle firmer, and ships are costing rather more than at last advices. Nevertheless the year closes under depressing auspices for owners of all classes of vessels. Steam freights are at the lowest point known for years, and agents find the greatest difficulty in obtaining cargoes even at such figures, while in spite of a slight recovery in charters, sailers find their business most unprofitable at the best obtainable rates. These conditions appear to effect all quarters. There has been an undoubted improvement in one or two directions during the year, but this has not been of sufficient importance to modify materially the conditions so generally prevailing. Steamers are further encroaching on the domain heretofore monopolised by sailers—another discouraging factor with which the latter have to contend. As to Australia, the close of the year sees a lull in the freight war which has been waged for three years between the A. A. Line and the older lines. The former have chartered no vessel for Melbourne since the Sea Witch, neither has a Sydney ship been taken to succeed the Salsette. This, followed by the shipment of much A.A. Line freight per old line vessels, has given rise to a report that the former do uot contemplate further despatches. Such rumours lack confirmation by the New York agents of the company, who continue to advertise that they will have vessels in the future for both Australian and New Zealand ports. At all events, there is now a cessation of competition, of which opportunity the old lines have availed to advance Sydney and Melbourne rates. These are 10 cents and 9 cents

per foot respectively, per Wandering Jew and Anna Herbertha. It is anticipated that the January rates to Melbourne will be not under 10 cents, oi.d may be higher. For Brisbane no vessel has yet been taken to succeed the Nairnshire, though a charter is in prospect. New Zealand rates have ruled as last advised up to date. For January loading the Jorgen Bang (Dunedin and Lyttelcon) and Clan Ferguson, (Wellington and Auckland) are advertised and rates named 18 cents for all ports. This after some sparring among charterers which up to December 30th promised its result in a New Zealand freight war. The J. W. McDermott is practically full. She will carry about 3,800 cases oil for Dunedin and 3,500 cases for Nelson. Berth rates may now be quoted as follows : Melbourne, 9 cents; Sydney 10 cents; Adelaide, 14 cents; New Zealand ports, 18 cents. The barque Paul left New York for Dunedin and Wellington on December 9, and the barque Ephialtes, for Wellington and Lyttelton, on December 30. The barque John McDermott cleared for Dunedin, Nelson, and Auckland, on December 30.

The barque Clan Ferguson was on the berth for Wellington and Auckland to load in January. The barque Mary Hashrouck is to load for Lyttelton, Wellington, and Auckland, to sail in February.
