THE PREMIER'S TELEGRAM TO MR. GLADSTONE.
Br the last mail the following letter was received by the secretary of the National Association :—
Whittingham, Prestonkirk, N.B. Bth October, 1892. Dear sir,— beg to acknowledge your letter of the 12th August dealing with the action taken by the National Association of New Zealand with reference to a> recent cablegram sent to Mr. Gladstone after the result of the recent geuoral election became known. Perhaps you will allow me to express my own personal opinion, that the course advocated by the National Association, namely, one of strict non-intervention in the party conflicts of the mother country, is likely to meet the approval of most sensible men, whether in England or the colonies.— am, etc., ARTUoa James Balfocr. John Haatie, Esq., Secretary National Association of New Zealand, Auckland.
We understand also that letters of acknowledgment were received some two months ago from the Riphk Hon. W. E. Gladstone and from Lord Salisbury, and that copies of the letter sent by tho National Association appeared in the leading papers in England, Scotland, and Ireland, with very favourable comments thereon.
The European Mail of November 11 has the following paragraph : — "Now we have more news aboub the cablegram of congratulation sent by Premier Ballance, of New Zealand, to Mr. Gladstone recently. Sir Robert Stoab has written homo in his capacity as president of the National Liberal Association of New Zealand, confirming the assurance that the vast majority of the people of New Zealand endorsed the action of the Wellington Premier. On the other hand, Mr. John Batger, the president of the National Association of New Zealand, claims that the feeling of tho colony was all tho other way. Doubtless Mr. Batger is quite right, and it is tolerably certain that Mr. Ballance will never repeat his impolitic conduct."
