A BANK CASHIER'S STORY.

Somk years ago (says Scottish Nights) a cashier in a Glasgow bank, when casting up his accounts at the close of a day, found to his horror that he was a thousand pounds short.

On going over the cheques ho had cashed during the day lie discovered that he had piad away for a cheque tor £160 no less a sum than £1160, thus showing him at a glance where the missing thousand had gone. He started at once for the house of the man to whom he had paid the money, but only to find that he was not at home. An hour or two later he called again. The man he sought was in bed ; he could not see him.

But ho brushed past the servant and made for the man's bodroom. Without delay he taxed him home with having received the missing thousand pounds, but met with a sturdy denial. " Look here," said the bewildered cashier, producing a pistol from his pocket, "I'll put a bullet through your head if you don't tell me where the money is." He in the bed strongly protested that ho had not received the money, and attempted to ring the bell to call assistance in expelling his unwelcome visitor. But it was no use. The cashier was in grim earnest.

" You don't move from that bed," he cried, " before you tell me where that money is. If you attempt to get out I'll shoot you dead." A few more protestations and threatening passed, and then the man confessed that he had received the missing thousand pounds. But it was not in the house. Then he had better get on his clothes and produce the money at once, for it had to be forthcoming that night. In a short time ho was ready for the journey, and the cabman who was called was told to drive to Crookston Castle.

And there, under one of the stones of that ruined mansion, the thousand pounds were recovered.
