The memorial tablet of the new buildings for the head office of the Government Insurance Department was laid to-day by Sir Patrick Buckley, in tho presence of a large crowd. The Athenaeum Library is in difficulties, and the committee want to wind up. Some subscribers, however, think an effort should be made bo carry ib on, and though the committee strongly urged immediate stoppage, a resolution was carried adjourning tho meeting to Monday. Meanwhile the more ardent spiribs are holding a meeting to devise ways and means to carry on, despite the committee's showing £500 of liabilities. Arrangements are being made by the Government to set up a commission of inquiry into G. W. Ells' case. It is proposed to ask Judge Ward and Mr. Thomas Thompson, M.H.R., to act as commissioners, and the inquiry will bo held at Christchurch. The remission of duty on cyanide of potassium is not intended to apply to cyanide of potassium imported for any other purpose than mining. Christchurch, Friday.
