The locale is Mechanics' Bay, and the scene depicts the sSth Regiment paraded upon the hill on which the Supreme Court now stands, and overlooking the flat of Mechanics' Bay, crowded with Maori warriors dancing the war dance, with their war canoes drawn up on the beach. In the bay at anchor rides 11.M.5. Fly, cleared ready for action, preparing to annihilate the belligerent natives. Prominent in the foreground stands Sir George Grey, accompanied by Colonel Wynyard and officers of the fleet and army, engaged in dictating terms of withdrawal to the Maori chiefs. This picture of a critical event in our national history is completed with a most peaceful background of the islands of the Hauraki Gulf, North Shore, and Rangitoto.
