FIRES.

A BZX-SOOXZO house occupied by Mr. J., Walters, Mount Albert, and owned byMr. Gilmour, was burned down on the 29th October. Mr. and Mrs. Walters left home to come to town during the evening, leaving a lamp burning, bub turned down. During their absence the house caught fire, and on their return the house was found burned to the ground. It is nob known how the tire arose. A firo occurred early on the 26th October at the Lorne-streeb store of Messrs. Boy Lin, Tanfield, and Co., china and earthenware merchants. The damage is estimated at £30, and was chiefly caused by smoke and water, as there was very little flame. The building, which is owned by Boylan, Tanfield, and Co., is insured for £300 in the Royal office, and the stock for £150 in the Royal and £1000 in the North German offices.

Two houses in North-east Valley, Otago, one occupied by Sydney Prosseer, and the other by Williams, the tramway manager, were burned down on Oct. 27. The first, in which the fire broke out, was a house of four rooms, and the other of eight rooms. Williams was insured for £300 in the New Zealand, and I'rosser for £200 in the New Zealand. Williams' furniture was insured for £300 in the Union.

A telegram was received by the police from Constable Joyce, of Tairua, conveying the information that at eight p.m. on Saturday, October 29, a stable and.outbuildings belonging to Mr. H. Laycock, the licensee of the Pukoire Hotel, were destroyed by fire. The buildings were not insured, and were valued at £100. A fire broke out on October 19 in Palmerston North in a storeroom in the rear of R. Leary's, chemist, shop. All the stock, valued at £700, stored in the room, was destroyed. The bone and tallow/works of Messrs. Mclntyre and Edwards, Kaikora Valley, Otago, were burned down on October 22. The buildings were insured in the New Zealand office for £200, while the stock, which was totally lost, was not insured. By a fire at the Terrace End, Palmerston North, on Oct. 25, Parker Bros.' grocery store and the old Dramatic Hall were burned down. The Princess Family Hotel had a narrow escape. A fire broke out on Oct. 16 in a toy shop in Cashel-street, Christchurch, occupied by the Misses Reid and Campbell. The flames communicated to the premises occupied by the Misses Ebert, dressmakers and milliners. Both buildings were constructed of wood, but the Fire Brigade succeeded in confining the flames to the back part of the premises. The stocks wore considerably damaged by water. Messrs, Reid and Campbell's insurance on stock was £400, and Misses Ebert'a stock was insured for £900, both in the Commercial Union. The shops were owned by Mr. William Gavin. The fire is supposed to have originated near the chimney. A six-roomed house at Woodhaugh, Otago, occupied by Mrs. Hill, was burnt down on Oct. 12. The house was insured in the Norwich Union for £150. The furniture was uninsured.

A small house in Shakespeare Road, Napier, was totally destroyed by fire at two a.m. on October 15. Insurances, £200; furniture, £100 ; both in the Norwich Union.
