Batger, one of the New Zealand athletic team which visited the Old Country, is once more in Auckland. Batger says that no one could have anticipated the > great effect of the change of climate which they experienced on arrival in England. The heavy, humid atmosphere of the old land completely upset them all. Speaking of Shaw, after his great race with Batger, he had to be carried off the field, completely done, and had to remain on his back for fully an hour afterwards. He would never meet Batger again, though he promised to be present at Manchester. Batger was anxious tor another trial of strength, and had considerable correspondence with Shaw as to another meeting, but nothing came of it. Shaw had won after a well-fought light, and seemed determined not to risk a defeat by another contest. No one could admit more fully and freely than H. W. Batger that he was beaten fairly, and he feels that it would be ungenerous even to appear to lessen the honours of tho English runners by making any excuses.
