THE LABOUR MARKET.

GOVERNMENT WORKS AT ROTORUA. THE UNEMPLOYED QUESTION. [Vt TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Thursday. The Minister for Public Works announces that he is determined bo proceed with works at Rotorua immediately. He haß already given the necessary instructions. He has sent detachments of men from Oamaru and Dunedin to Wilson's River. Fifty men will be at once taken bo work on the ObagoCentral line, and sixty men will be sent to the Cablin's River district. It is also affirmed that artizans and labouring men have come from Australia to take up land under settlement conditions. These men possess more or less capital to enable them bo start. They are, in fact, returning New Zealanders. They have been recommended bo " bry bhe Taranaki district." They propose to take work for awhile until they get some experience. The Ministerial Journal says there is " a good mixture of muscle, determination, and cash" among them. I sent you in my last bhe somewhat rueful report of the chairman of the Wei lington Benevolent Society. The Ministerial journal to-day says that a hundred men are wanted in Hunterville and Marton districts for bushfelling, and cannot be got. The Opposition press affirm that " Wives have applied for assistance at the Labour Bureau who had letters from their husbands, stating that no work was to be had." On the other hand, Mr. Van Stavern is described as uttering " unreasonable jeremiads." Such is the difference of opinion that prevails in this city on this subject. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] Wellington, Thursday. With reference bo the statement of the Times that there is a scarcity of men for labour in this district, the chairman of the benevolent trustees states there are 200 able-bodied men out of work here at present, and that an applicant for charitable aid had received a letter from the Labour Bureau, regretting that no employment could be found for him in this district.
