LAW AND POLICE.
POLICE COURT.—Saturday. [Before Dr. Giles, R.M.] Drunkenness, first offender was fined ss, or in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Kate Hinch was fined 20s, or in default 48 hours' imprisonment. Mary Hamilton was fined 20s, or in default three days'imprisonment. Larceny.—George White, alias Hanson, alias Martin, was charged with stealing, on October 25th, one cornet case and cornet fittings, of the value of £1 ss, the property of Herman Leopold Hoffmann. Accused pleaded guilty to the charge, stating that he had committed the offence whilst under the influence of liquor. Dr. Giles remarked that accused had a very bad record, and sentenced him to three months' imprisonment with hard labour. Alleged Indecent Assault.—Richard John Pearce was charged with unlawfully and indecently assaulting Amy Amelia Spiers, on October 28th. Accused wa3 further charged with indecently assaulting Mary. Lilian Edwards, on October 28th. Inspector Broham applied for a remand till Tuesday next, in rder to allow the police to procure the necessary evidence,. Accused was admitted to bail, himself in £50, and one surety in each case in £25. Inspector Broham said that he looked upon the cases as very grave ones, and asked for a large: bail. Dr. Giles said that in fixing bail he had taken into account; that accused was a cripple, and it was improbable that he would escape. Mr. Matthews said Mr. Green was willing to give larger security if one security would be accepted. Dr. Giles said he would vary the bail to accused to himself in £50, and one surety in £50, or two in £25 in each case.
