Company's steamer Argyle arrived from Mercury Bay and Kuaotunu. She leaves again this evening. . Yesterday the Union S.S. Company s coastal steamer Kanieri, Captain Dawson, arrived from Napier and the East Coast. Mr. Barclay, the purser, reports that the steamer left Napier at 7 p.m. on the 26th instant, arriving at Gisborne Wharf at 10 o'clock the following morning. Left Gisborne at 10 o'clock the same night for East Coast ports and Auckland. Worked Tologa Bay, Anaura, Tokomaru, Napier, Tuparoa, and Awanui on the 2Sth, anchoring at Kawakawa for the night. The brigantine Kenilworth sailed from Hobart for this port on Saturday last. The brigantine Lady Mabel sailed from Newcastle for this pert on Saturday last. Captain McLean, of the Janet Nicoll, which arrived from Timaru on Saturday, reports having passed a large kauri log 30 miles W. byN. off Matakawa. It would be well for masters of vessels on the coast to keep a sharp look out for the obstruction as it is right in the track usually traversed, and would prove a most dangerous object to come in contact with. The schooner Annie Hill is to leave the Thames this week for Lyttelton with a cargo of timber from Bagnall's mill, Turua. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Co.'s steamer Arawa, which left Lyttelton on September 16, arrived at London on Thursday last, with her cargo of frozen meat in good condition. The cargo steamer Lincolnshire is to sail for Wellington this afternoon. On the 23rd instant whilst in latitude 20"17 S., longitude 177"1S W., the steamer Ovalau spoke the British ship Clan Buchanan, bound from Osaka, Japan, to New York, 53 days out, all well. The cutter Margaret Casey sailed for Dunedin on Saturday. The French warship Dnchaffault left Wellington for this port; on Saturday morning. The auxiliary ketch Scotchman arrived from Whangarei yesterday afternoon with a cargo of lime. She returns to Whangarei to-morrow evening. The s.B. Southern Cross. Captain Adams, arrived in harbour early this morning from Wellington and the East Coast. Mr. Stevens, the purser, reports that the steamer left Wellington at 8 p.m. on the 26th instant, reaching Napier at 11 p.m. on the 27th; left again at 4 p.m. on the 28th, calling at Gisborne, Tologa Bay, and Tuparoa on the 29th t leaving the latter port ait 8 p.m., and arriving as above, having experienced fine weather throughout the trip. THE UPOLU.

The Union S.S. Co.'a Island steamer Upolu, Captain George Crawshaw, arrived in harbour at a quarter-past 2 o'clock on Saturday afternoon from Samoa, Fiji, and Tonga with a cargo of sugar, fruit, etc. Mr. James A. Tubby, the purser, to whom we are indebted for late Samoan and Fijian papers, reports that the Upolu left Auckland at 5.30 p.m. on the sth instant, and called at' Russell the next day. Coaled bunkers at Opua, and left the same day at 5.30 p.m. Encountered strong N.E. wind and heavy sea for the first 24 hours, and arrived at Nukualofa at 3 p.m. on the 11th. Left there at 5 a in. on the 12th, called at Haapai the same day, and Vavau on the 13th, and dropped anchor in Apia harbour at 6 a.m. on the 15th. Lett the latter port at 2 p.m. on the 17th, and arrived at Suva at 6 a.m. on the 20th. Proceeded to Lancala Bay the same forenoon, returning to Suva on the 21st. Cleared out for Tonga at 5 a.m. on the '22nd. The Upolu arrived at Nukualofa at 6.30 a.m. on the 24th, and left there at 1 p.m. Called at Valetoa at 2 p.m. the same afternoon, and left again after two hours' stay. Sighted the Gaeat Barrier at 4 30 on Saturday morning, passed Tiritiri at 12 15 p.m., and made fast to Queen-street Wharf as above. _ Experienced light to moderate variable winds and fine weather amon" the Islands; from Nukualofa strong variable winds and heavy sea till the 2StS; thence light S.E. wind, fine weather, and smooth sea to arrival. As soon as she was berthed the work of discharging her consignments of fruit commenced, and the steamer went up to the Sugar Works in the afternoon to put out her cargo of sugar. She is announced to leave for Tonga and Samoa on Thursday at 5 p.m. THE NEW ZEALAND. The Norwegian barque New Zealand, Captain J. Leonhardsen, arrived in harbour on Saturday morning from Mew York, via i Dunedin, and Lyttelton, bringing a part cargo of general merchandise from the former port, and a quantity of grain from the latter. The master reports having sailed from Lyttelton on the 22nd instant, with a north-east wind, which continued until the 24th, when south-east winds prevailed until making port. The East Uape was passed at 6.30 p.m. on the 26th. The tug-boat Eagle picked the vessel up outside Tiritiri early on Saturday morning and towed her into port. She will berth at the Quay-street Jetty this morning, and commence discharging at once. From here the vessel goes to Samoa to load copra for Europe. The barque is a fine-look-ing vessel, and was built in 1883 at Grimstad, Norway. She is owned by Mr. J, A. Jacobsen, of Farsand, Norway. ISLAND SHIPPING. H.M.S. Curacoa was at Suva on the 20th instant. The barque Viking arrived at Suva from Sydney on the 18th instant. On discbarge she loads copra for Europe. The Tongan Government schooner JisJe Tafa arrived at Suva from Tonga on the 18th instant. During her stay she is to be thoroughly overhauled, and will be stripped and re-coppered, and provided with new sails, running gear, etc. The German warship Bussard was at Apia on October lEk PORT OF ONEHUNGA.
