THE V.R.C. MEETING.

Prttt A donation.—Electric Telegraph.—Copyright' Melbourne, October 18. TRAINING NOTES. The weather is clearing up, but the majority of the tracks at Flemington are not yet fit for fast work, and this morning, nothing better than three-quarter pace was attempted. Portsen moved freely in a strong two-mile gallop, and the following did strong pacing:—Bel Giorno, Penance, Forty Winks, Clonard, Oxide, Chatham, Little Bernie, Calculus, Two-up, Pilot Boy, Quality, Jericho, Cainoola, and Autonomy. Candour moved along nicely, and though on the small side, shows much quality. Oxide also fills the eye pleasingly, whilst Autonomy improves every gallop. At Caul field this morning Tirailleur covered two miles at stout pace, moving freely, and pulling up sound. Attains and St. Albans 11. are expected to arrive at Flemington at the end of the week. They are both reported to be in excellent condition. Vakell and Hortensius have been scratched for all engagements at the meeting. THE BETTING. For the V.R.C. Derby 5 to 4 is the best offer against Camoola. Portaea has been backed for the Mel bourne Cup to win £5000 down to 100 to 5. Clonard is quoted at the sameprice. Affiance has been supported to win £3000 at 100 to 3. Betting on the Melbourne Cup is dull. Affiance has hardened to 100 to 4. This is the only alteration in the betting quotations. THE MEW ZEALAND UUP. A fair amount of business continues to be transacted on the New Zealand Cup. The prices on offer in Auckland are. — . 4to 1 against St. Hippo oto 1 — Prime Warden 6 to 1 & acksliut 10 to 1 Cyniaca 10 to l Dilemma 10 to 1 l.aunceston 10 to 1 Lebel 10 to 1 Merne England 10 to 1 Morion 20 to 1 Stepniak. It is understood that the commission executed last week in favour of Launceaton was on behalf of the owner, Mr. D. O'Brien. £2000 is mentioned as the amount that was secured. So far as his work is concerned Launceston has not revealed anything that would cause his chance to be highly reckoned; and in fact most of the Southern writers speak disparagingly of his prospects of earning distinction in the big Southern race. Crackshot has been putting in long work at Riccarton of late, but it is stated that he has not. been pleasing the course watchers. Clanranald has made his re-appearance, but as his trainer continues to apportion him i the easiest of exercise, it is thought that he will be an absentee from the Cup acceptance list on Friday. ' •; „,„„'_ -<* The Dreamer arrived last week at ittccar ton, and is said to be in capital niok. The Dunedin-owned Don Pedro, regarded as one of the bf t-hand.capped horses in the Cup, is said to.have^ne »™g and, it is thought, unlikely to be amongst the i a °ffiSer. is reported to be backward in I his preparation, \ «-■
