Wilkinson, R. Menzies, A. Menzies. C. Motion, O. Bobinson, K. D. Halstead, P. Quinlan, M. S. Laurie, J. Porter; committee, i»r. Davy, Messrs. O. Mcßride, T. D. Halstead, P. Quiidan, M. 8. Laurie, M. Foley, B. Menzies, J. Ryan, B. Kinloeh, T. Wylie, J. Martin, E. S. Cole: clerk of scales, Mr. G. Morley; clerk Of course, Mr. T. Brown; handicapper, Mr. E. IX Halstead; treasurer, M. S. Laurie, Ksq.; timekeeper, Jas. Cooke, Esq.; secretary, A. H. Trubshaw. The Spring Meeting of the Onslow Trotting Club was held in Potter's Paddock on Saturday, and although the threatening nature of the weather prevented a lartje attendance, the proceedings on the whole were fairly successful. It is true that occasional showers of rain and continued expectance thereof had an effect the reverse of enlivening, and that as few of the events proved of more than passing interest, the afternoon's sport was only fairly good, but still the Club has no reason to be ashamed of the meeting, or to be disheartened by circumstances it could not possibly control, Under more favourable auspices the meeting would probably have been brilliantly successful and enjoyable, and the stewards can at least console themselves with the reflection that they did all that they could to deserve the reward which an adverse fate denied them. The trotting races were numerously contested as a rule, and although the fields were not large for the pony gallops the races were watched with a considerable amount of interest. The big trot was won in fine style by Midnight, and the same gelding almost won the Trot—he actually passed the judge first, but at that supreme moment his pace was not a trot. The Maiden Trot was won by Mr. J. J. Russell's Peggy, and the Wheel Race by Sparrowhawk, an animal showing good pace, and a very taking style. The scratching of Rarus from all events was a keen disappointment to many who had looked forward to his appearance as one of the features of the day. To Mr. Fletcher's mare Minnie Grey belongs the honour of carrying off the two events for which she was entered, the Maiden Pony race and the Hurdles, although she was somewhat hardly pressed in the latter by Mr. Greenwood's Pica. The Onslow Stakes Handicap proved an easy thing for Pica, only three others starting. The totalisator tickets were 10s each throughout the day, and the amount put through both machines was £1421. Hunter's Band was on the course and played lively selections at frequent intervals. The events resulted as follows :—, Handicap Maiden Trot of SOsovs,; second horse, 590TS. Two miles. In. Out. 40 60—Mr. J. J. Bussell's Peggy, scr. (E. Abbott) 1 4 3—Mr. N. Archibald's Cadiz, 28sec$. (Archibald) - ..2 83 64—Mr. G. Robinson's ..Nellie 11., 32secs. The scratch mare started a favourite, and justified the popular selection. She overtook the others one after the other, and took tbe lead about half-a-inile from home. Cadis kept close behind for the remainder of the distance, and Peggy only won by a couple of lengths. Time, sm. 565. Totalisators:—lnside : 104 investors ; dividend, £1 3s. After some delay at the post a fair start was effected, La Grippe being the first to show in front. She led right round until a quarter of a mile from home, when Minnie Grey assumed command and subsequently won hands down by about a length, 'lime: 1 min 56secs. Totalisator : Inside, 184 investors ; dividend, £1 3s. Outside : 294 investors ; dividend £1 2s. Onslow Trot Handicap of SOsovs; second horse 7 sovs. Three miles. In. Out. 83 95—Mr. E. G. Edwards) 3 Other starters: (15-35) Stohr's Charlie 82'*ecs; (10 8) Trulwhaw's Hurricane, 50 sees; and (17-10) Harford's Tyrone, 65 sees. Martha led most of the way, and when about half the distance had been traversed had so great an advantage that it looked impossible for any of the others to overtake her. In the last round, however, she appeared to have tired, and Midnight, who had previously been second throughout, caught and passed the mare shortly before the straight was reached. Midnight won by a couplo of lengths. Time : 8 min 39 sees. Totalisator : Inside, 219 investors; dividend, £133. Outside : 279 investors ; dividend £1 Os. Baynes's Lady Fanny, 7st 31b (R. Donovan) .. 3 The only other starter was (0—17) Moore's Isabel, 7st. This race proved a hollow victory for Pica, who led all the way, and won as he liked. Time, lm. 40 2-ss. Totalisators: Inside, 41 investors, dividend 18s ; outside, 142 investors, dividend 15s. Wheel Race Handicap, of 45sovs; second horse ssovs. Two miles and a-quaiter. In. Out.

(Greenwood) 3 The only other starter was (20—35) Robinson's Laddie, tiss. Sparrowhawk won without being troubled—in fact, when he finished he had, if anything, increased the advantage with which he started —and his neat style of trotting was much admired. Charlie was last during most of the race, but managed to come up into third place just at its close. Time, 7m. 255. Totalisators: Inside, 195 investors, dividend £3 12s; outside, 247 investors, dividend, £3 10s. Handicap Hurdles of 30sovs, second horse ssovs ; for ponies under 14 hands 2 inches. In. Hauraogi was first to show in front, but at the back of the course Minnie Grey was leading with Pica second. Little Nannie having came down at the first hurdle. Minnie Grey maintained the lead, and won by a little more than a length, Pica coming up well at the finish. Time, 3m. ss. Totalisators : Inside, 282 investors, dividend £1 7s; outside, 333 investors, dividend £1 7s. Huia Handicap Trot of 35sovs, second horse Ssovs. One mile and a-balf. In. Out. 26 29— G. Ladybird went through her horses cleverly, and Midnight followed suit, the latter taking the lead just before the straight was reached. The two came up the straight together, and an exciting struggle ensued. Midnight passed the post a short half length to the good, but as he happened to be galloping at that particular moment the race was awarded to Lady Bird. Time, 4min 23sec, Totalisators : Inside, 154 investors, dividend, £2 lis. Outside, 172 investors, dividend £2 12s. Over twenty horses were entered and handicapped for the Benefit Sweepstake Trot, the totalis itor profits on which were to go to the Whangarei disaster fund, but as the hour was late, and darkness had begun to set in, the event was postponed till the afternoon of Wednesday next.
