All uncertainty and speculation regarding the new appointments to the Legislative Council have now been set at rest The names of the chosen twelve appear in our columns this morning, having been published in a supplementary Gazette issued on Saturday evening. As was anticipated, the list contains the names of four representatives of labour selected by the several Trades and Labour Councils in the chief cities. These men are all new to Parliamentary work, but they will go far to justify their appointment if they acquit themselves as well as the Labour members in the Lower House have done. Of the others five have been members at one time or another of the House of Representatives, and one has been a Minister of the Crown. Needless to say all the new Councillors are men of the right political colour, and may be depended upon to accord the Ministry a loyal support, that, indeed, being the special purpose for which they have been called into existence. Of the men themselves it is not possible to speak with any fullness of knowledge, for most of them are unknown to fame outside their own particular localities. We have already alluded to the Auckland Labour representative. Mr. McCullough has, we understand been selected because of his connection with the Thames goldfield, and will no doubt prove a useful member. It is, of course, impossible to predict the result of this new infusion of blood into the Legislative Council, but if each succeeding Ministry is to possess the power of flooding that Chamber with its nominees, the time cannot be far off when the Council must either be mended or ended.
