THE V.A.T.C. MEETING.

CAMOOLA AND AUTONOMY VICTORIOUS. Press Auociation.— Telegraph.—Copyright. Melbourne, October 8. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club's Spring Meeting opened to-day at Caulfield. The weather was fine in the morning, but just prior to the Debutant Stakes coming up for decision a drizzling rain set in. His Excellency the Governor and suite were present. fhe attendance of the public was very fair, but nothing out of the ordinary. The racing was of an interesting nature, and in the jumping events there were no serious mishaps to mar the day's pleasure. Autonomy's performance in the Guineas was very far from reassuring to his backers for the V.R.C. Derby. Half-a-mile from home he assumed command, and silenced everything else; but Azitn, who appeared hopelessly out of the race, came with a great rushat the distance and sustained it so long that the favourite would almost certainly have suffered defeat had there been another half furlong to travel. The Captain, who is not quite wound up, finished a neck behind the placed horses. The following are the results :— The Caulfield Stakes of SOOsovs; the owner of the second horse to receive 75sovs, and the owner of the third 25sovs from the stake. For three years old and upwards. Weight for age. The winner of any race (not a handicap) of the value of 300 so vs to carry a penalty of 51b; of 500sovs, 71b; of 10003ovs and over, 14lb. One mile and a furlong. Mr. J. B. Clark's ch c Camoola, 3yrs, by Chester— Bst 111b, including 141b penalty (E. Huxley)... ■ 1 Mr. J. Whittingha'm's b h Spokesman, aged, 9st 4lb (Ettridge) 2 Mr. G. VVoodforde's ch h G'Naroo, 6yrs, 9st 41b (Morrison) 3 Thirteen horses started. Betting : 5 to 4 on Bungebah, 6 to 1 against Paris and Pygmalion, 7to 1 Camoola. Bungebah got away with a lead, but suddenly dropped back, and was never dangerous in the race. Pygmalion then took up the running, and led right round and into the straight, when Camoola, who had got away badly, came through, and galloped homo an easy winner by a length. Time, lm. 57|s. Glenloth, Pygmalion, Althotas. Paris, Malvolio, Bungebah, Chatham. Swordbearer, Insomnia, and Norbert finished in the order named. Public opinion is very pronounced concerning the running of Bungebah and Paris, especially after Bungebah getting away so favourably. In the straight, too, he had a clear run, but never attempted to take advantage thereof. The Handicap Hurdle Race of 250sovs; the owner of the second horse to receive GOsovs from the stake.
