POLICE COURT. -Saturday. [Before Dr. Giles, R.M.] Drunkenness.— One first offender was fined 5s and costs, or in default twenty four hours' imprisonment. Frank Smith was fined 10s and costs, or in default forcyeighb hours' imprisonment. PUTTY- Larceny-.—Henry Schumaker was charged with stealing, on September 16, a paint brush, of the value of Bd, the property of John Clare. Accused pleaded nob guilty to the charge. The evidence showed that accused, who was a carter, was seen leaving Uochrane's mart on September 16 with the brush in his pocket. Dr. Giles said this was a very contemptible form of thefb, and sentenced accused to fourteen days' imprisonment, with hard labour. Alleged Larceny/. — William Cooper Hogg was charged that on September 8 he stole one whip, two stirrups and leathers, one tomahawk, two bits, and one bridle, of the total value of 355, the property of Leonard Morrison. As the boy had been sent over to his parents, as agreed upon the previous day, Dr. Giles dismissed the case without recording a conviction. Maintenance Case.—Henry Byron was charged with failing to provide his wife and six children with adequate means of support. • Mr. Baume appeared on behalf of the complainant. Complainant deposed that-defendant was in the receipt of £3 a week, and would not provide his children with food. Defendant stated that for some time past he had been paying £6 a month for food alone, and kept the house in clothes and necessaries. Defendant stated that his wife had such a violent temper that he was afraid that there would be trouble if they continued in the same house. An interim order was made that the defendant pay £6 per month pending arrangements for the future.
