VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

♦ VICTORIA RIFLES. The fifth annual competition for the muchcoveted Schapp's Belt took place at the Mount Eden Range on Saturday afternoon. The weather was all that could be desired for good shooting, but apparently the want of practice told on a good many of the competitors, the shooting not being so good as on previous occasions, when Volunteer T. Fairs won with the fine score of 114, and subsequently when Colour-Sergeant (now Lieutenant) Skinner won with the good score of .101. This year's winner, Volunteer M. Fairs, has proved himself a most consistent shot, he being at the top of nearly every competition held by the corps during the past eighteen months. The firing was oarried out under the supervision of Captain R. L, Somers. The following are some of the highest scores :— 200 300 400 500 yards, yards, yards, yards. Tl. (Pol. M. The ranges were 300, 500 and 600 yards, seven shots at each distance. Martini-Henry rifles. Although the entries are not so numerous as last year, the eleven men who came up to the scratch on Saturday are well-known shots, eight of whom having been repsesentatives at the Mew Zealand meetings several times, and two others can claim to having established themselves at a single meeting. Out of such a contest, the four men that place themselves in a test of three matches should have the confidence of the district. Owing to two corps holding competitions the same afternoon, the last range had to be fired in six o'clock light, with clouded sunset, which made it impossible for big totals being reached. Subjoined are the scores :— 300 500 600 ■ yds yds yds Tl. Vol. McCarthy, Vic. Rifles ..29 30 25 84 Gun. Taylor, A Battery .. 27 34 23 34 Gun.
