~, ■- Wines, Spirits. &c ; POLITICAL CONTRASTS. THK HON. JOHN BALLANCE Hill HARRY ATKINSON SIB JULIUS VOGEL Opinions on political matters are everybody has an opinion of some sort. Some think that Ballance and his party are the willing instruments of the evil one ; others think them the only men capable of ushering in that era of unexampled prosperity termed by some enthusiasts the Working MeaslMillenium ; others, again, are loud in their praises of the author of the Public Works Policy, whilst others clamour for Sir Harry Atkinson ; but one and .ill are unanimous in pronouncing Buchanan's House of Commons Whisky "the Purest and Best in the market.'

Writing some time ago about the cultivation of oats and wheat in America, the Mark Lane Express stated that the growth of tho oat crop in the States since 1867 is very surprising. In that year 278,698,000 bushels were grown on 10,746,416 acres, the average yield being 25'9 bushels per acre; while in 1891 738,394,000 bushels were grown on 25,581,861 acres, this being at the rate of 28*9 bushels per acre. The.value, however, must be very disappointing now. In 1867 thi3 was is 7d per bushel, and last year.only Is 4d, the result being the small crop in 1867 was worth £34,494,600 and that; last year £46,462,453. An acre of oats was worth £3 4s 2£d in 1867, and £1 16s 4d in 1891. Curiously enough wheat does not show so great a' fluctuation. In 1869 an acre (yielding an average of 13*5 bushels) was worth £2 lis 2d, while last year an acre (15-3 bushels) was worth £2 lis 7d. Wheat was at its lowest in 1885, in which year an acre (10*4 bushels) averaged only £1 12s 2id. Manchester, July 22, 1892. Circular letter to agents No. 55. The Secretary Auckland Gas Company, Limited.— We beg to advise you 1 that we received the highest award for any gas engine shown at the Crystal Palace Electrical Exhibition. There were ten different makes of engines exhibited, seven of which received silver medals, ana two received bronze medals. We are the only firm of gas engine makers who received the high award of the " Diploma of Honour." The committee included such names as Professors Ayrton, Crookes, Perry, Robinson, Silvanus Thompson, Unwin, Mr. Preece, etc., who are among the leading scientists of this country. We think that their opinion as to which is the best gas engine in the market is of considerable Crossley Brothers, Limited. •
