Chrstchurch, Monday. At the adjourned iiquest on the body of the infant found in (he Heathcote river on September 3rd, the jury returned a verdict that there was no evidence as to the causo of death, and expressed the opinion that there was not conclusive evidence that the girl in custody was the mother of the child. In consequence of the delay of the fire engines in gettinj to the lira at Messrs. Kempthorne's, a rile recently made by the City Council that horses were not to bo galloped to fires has been practically rescinded. The mitter is to be left to the discretion of the superintendent. Stratford, Monday. The Chairman of the Stratford Town Board lias called a public meeting to obtain evidence in support of the Stratford route. Palmekston, Monday. On Saturday nigit a cash-box containing £33 10s in notes, gold, and silver, also cheques and valuable papers representing above £2000, was stolen from Mr. (}. Howes's bed-room in the Royal Hotel. The proprietor made up his accounts as usual, and placed the casi-box under his bed. He went downstairs till a quarter-past twelve, and then went to bid. His room looked all riyht, but in the morning he found the cash-box gone, It was evidently taken a short time after it was placed under the bed, and while Mr. Howes was downstairs. The cash- was found yesterday in a paddock near the boundary road. The money had been taken, but the papers were left inside. The theft is believed to be the work of spielers.

Wellington, Monday. Last week the Labour Bureau secured work for 32 men, the majority being bush hands. The men hail from all parts of the colony. To-day the bureau sent 25 men to Mr. Donnelly's station in Napier. The Art Society were disappointed in not being able to hold their fourth exhibition in their own gallery, the completion of which has been delayed by wet weather. The pictures show a marked advance, but the drawing is conspicuous for weakness in many cases. The Governor, opening the exhibition, said he was greatly struck with the progress made in art, painting, and music since he had been in the colony.
