THE SAN FRANCISCO-MAIL SERVICE.

[by TELEGRAPH. association*.] Wellington, Monday. The Postal Department has received no intimation from the English Post Office of the rumoured withdrawal from the San Francisco mail contract. The local department communicated with the Imperial Government respecting the renewal of the subsidy, and their only reply so far has been an acknowledgment of the letter. The amount of subsidy at present paid by the Imperial Government is £5533, but as they also pay the cost of conveying the mails through America and across the Atlantic, their contributions. amount to nearly.£ls,ooo annually.

Our Wellington correspondent telegraphs :— " The New Zealand Parliament last year gave authority to the PostmasterGeneral to renew the San Francisco service for three years. The Postal authorities in London have continued it only from year to year. The Agent-General was recently asked to endeavour to obtain their agreement to a more satisfactory arrangement than that, but as the general elections were then beginning to absorb attention, the subject could not be considered. If the subsidy of the Imperial Government is discontinued, the San Francisco service may have to cease. Mr. Ward will, no doubt, receive information on the matter."
