"DEATH OF PLUMMER."
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — unfortunate occurrence (at least to poor Plummer) has caused some considerable diversity of opinion on the action of the constable. At the time Plummer was being hunted he was neither a prisoner, nor was it legally proved he was the person who committed the robberies (although presumably there is little doubt he was), nor does the evidence at the inquest clearly show that the constable or Mr. Shepherd's life was endangered. Neither the constable nor the other witnesses state that shots were directed at them, but that they heard a gun fired. We can easily understand that the settlers in that vicinity are not sorry to lose Plummer's society, or that his death was caused accicidentally, but whether the somewhat hurried inquest and the verdict, is a correct one, may be questioned. Probably " Death by misadventure" would have been a more just one. Plummer had many vices, but those who know the man say he had his good points, and at times when he went wrong he was not answerable for his actions.—l am, &c., 11 _ Ipso Jure.
