ALLEGED STEALING FROM THE PERSON.

♦ ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. At the Police Court yesterday morning, before Dr. Giles, William James Rogers was charged with having, on the 14th of August, feloniously stolen irom the person of Thomas Mitchell Dawson, the sum of £8 10s 2d in money. Sergeant Gamble conducted the case for tiie prosecution, and the accused was undefended.

Thomas Mitchell Dawson, a master mariner, deposed that he resided at the Waitemata Hotel. On the evening of the day in question, witness, after having taken some drinks, found himself in Abercrombiestreet at about eleven o'clock. He was invited into a house in that street by the prisoner. A man named Druuimond was with him. Witness and prisoner sat down together, and the latter put his arm around witness, and his hand into witness's pocket. Witness grasped his wrist, and saw his purse in accused's hand. The purse contained seven £1 notes. The purse had been un opened since the previous Saturday, at hal past ten a.m. After taking the monevj accused darted out of the door. Witnes followed him, and having caught him, held him until the police arrived. Accused wa3 then given in charge. Witness certainly did not give the money to the accused. He may have been slightly under the influence of drink, having had about three glassed of boor. Daniel D r nmmond, a mariner, deposed that he was with the previous witness on the evening of the 14th instant. They entered a house where the prisoner was. Dawson gave the prisoner two shillings to get some beer, and prisoner then went out, but did not come back with the drink. About ten minutes after this Dawson said that he had lost his money, and the two went out to look for Rogers. Witness went into the Wynyard Arms, and on coming out witness saw the prisoner speaking to a constable. Prisoner was then arrested. Constable Keep gave evidence as to the arrest of the accused, who denied having taken the money. Dawson stated that he had lost £8 10s 2d. Prisoner had in his pocket an empty money bag, which was identified by Dawson as his property. Accused was committed for trial. Bail was allowed—himself in £50 and two sureties in £25 each.
