A majt named Frank Lowe, who was arrested in Sydney on a charge of obtaining goods by means of false pretences here, has been committed for trial. A young man named Charles Hillier, a bush labourer, shot himself through the head with a pistol, in a city restaurant, last night. Of late he has been very despondent, owing to his inability to obtain suitable work. Greymouth, Tuesday. Tho Greymouth Gold Dredging Washing Company have discontinued work. It is said the appliances are not equal to saving such fine gold; Sometimes there was it margin of profit and at other times a loss. A meeting of shareholders was held this afternoon, when it was decided to go into liquidation. The dredge has been on the ground about three years, and a large amount of capital has been spent without any return. Christchurch, Tuesday. An elderly woman, Mrs. Henley, died suddenly at Halswell last night. The cause is not yet known. • Dunedin, Tuesday. The University Council, the School Commissioners, and the High School Board of Governors have all protested against interference with the management of the reserves, as proposed by the new Land Bill. The High School Board assert that if the change is made it will tend to seriously diminish the income of the Board, and seriously affect the efficiency of the schools under its control. The Otago Poultry and Dog Society's dog show was opened to-day, and was very successful. Out of 165 entries, over 150 came forward. In rough-coated collies, bitches, Mather and Bruce (Christchurch) secured the second, and R. Wark the first, for collie under 12 months ; W. Winchester (Oamaru) secured the first for greyhound under 12 months; Wise's Carbine was placed third for dogs. In fox terriers, Graves (Ashburton) took third for dog under 12 months; Mirscbamp (Christchurch) took second for bull-terriers.
