LECTURES.
An interesting lecture on "Bush Life in Australia," was delivered by the Rev. S. J. Serpell, in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms on July 8. Considering the unpleasant weather there was a good attendance, and the lecturer's remarks—which were principally descriptive of the conditions of a Victorian settler's lite, his struggles against pioneering difficulties, and his surroundings generally—were listened to with marked attention. Mr. T. Buddie presided, and during the evening Mr. L. St. J. Kekwick gave a couple of appropriate recitations in capital style. A well-attended meeting of the members of the Auckland Institute was held on July 11, Professor Brown presiding. Professor Pond read an able and interesting paper on " The Aryans in Their Primitive Home." The chairman referred in eulogistic terms to the excellence of the paper, and, on the motion of Mr. R. Udy, seconded by the Rev. Dr. Purchas—both of whom, abo made complimentary remarks — a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Professor Pond.
At the Manger a Mutual Society's meeting on July 4, Mr. Margett's read a paper on " Agriculture," or rather a sketch of the progress of agriculture. A number of readings and recitations were also contributed by other members of the Society. A lecture, entitled " National Wealth and National Life," was delivered on the 21st June by the Rev. Joseph Bates, in the Wesley Hall, Pitt-street, under the auspices of the Anti-Poverty Society. Mr. A. Kelly (president of the Society) occupied the chair, and about forty ladies and gentlemen were present. On the motion of Mr. S. Bright, seconded by Dr. Broome, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Bates, and a similar compliment to the chairman closed the meeting." A lecture of an interesting character was given by Professor ('. A. M. Pond, of the Auckland University College, in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms on June 24, under the auspices of the Auckland Literary Societies Union, the subject being " Fairyland and Fairy Tales." There was a large attendance both of ladies and gentlemen. The Rev. L. H. Outram presided. A vote of thanks was given to Professor Pond for his lecture.
