The Union Co. Fijian steamer Ovalau Lap tain R. E. Smith, has arrived from Westport with a cargo of coal, which she takes on to Fiji for the Sugar Co. mills. Mr. Geo Crawley, the purser, reports that the steamer left Westport on Monday morning last, at 11 o'clock, and rounded the North Cape on Wednesday. Experienced fair winds with heavy seas during the trip. Yesterday the Ovalau was busily engaged in taking on board cargo for Suva and Levuka, for which porta she leaves this evening. Co.'s steamer Wellington arrived from Whangarei last evening, with a number of passengers and a quantity of kauri gum and sundries. She leaves for Whangarei again to night. The brigantine Eillan Donan was towed down from the Sugar Works by the steam launch Despatch, and berthed at the Railway Wharf. She is to load timber at Helens ville for Sydney. , The barquentine Coquette, now oil her way from Whaugarei to Helensville with coal, has been fixed by Mr. M. Niccol to load timber at the latter place for Sydney for the Kauri Timber Company The cargo of copra by theTorea from Rarotonga has been placed on board the ship Titnaru. to await the arrival of the Forfarshire, now on her way to load at this port for London. The pearl shell by the Torea is to be shipped into the 3.3. kaikoura. The loading of the German barque Johann Adolph is being gone on with, it is expected that she will sail for New York next week. The mail steamer Mariposa, from Sydney, is due to-day. She will resume her voyage to Apia, Honolulu, and San Francisco at 2 o'clock to-morrow afternoon. The barque New Zealand sailed from New York for Dunedin, Lyttelton, and Auckland on Mav 23. The barquentine Elinor Vernon has been chartered at New York for Wellington and Auckland. The ketch Agnes Martin will leave for Long Island to-day. The Auckland schooner Ivanhoe. which is at present under charter to Messrs. J. T. Arundel and Co.. arrived at Apia from Tahiti on the Sth instant.

THE MONOWAI. Shortly after 8 o'clock last evening the mail steamer Monowai. Captain M. Carey, arrived in harbour from San Francisco, J Honolulu, and Apia, with the English and j American mails. Mr. J. Ness Keith, the i purser, to whom we are indebted for our j tiles and despatches, reports that the Mono- ■ wai cleared the " Golden Gate " on June 24th at 3p.m.: arrived at Honolulu on July Ist at I 7 a.m., sailing same day at 3 p.m., and was off Apia on July Bth at 3 p.m.; went inside harbour and lauded cargo, leaving again at 6.30 p.m. The weather up to Apia was all that could be desired, unusually cool and I very calm, but after departure from the j Samoan Group the wind shifted into the south-west and blew hard to arrival, which greatly retarded the ship's progress. The run was made in the good time (steaming) of IS days 22 hours, the best day's run being 342 knots. The Monowai leaves for Sydney at 4 o'clock this morning.

THE KAIKOURA. Yesterday evening the New Zealand Shipping Co.'s steamer Kaikoura, Captain W. G. Crutchley (R.N.R.) anchored off Rangitoto Reef, where she is to remain until daylight this morning, when she will come up to the Queen-street Wharf and commence discharging her cargo. The steam launch Despatch, having on board Dr. Lewis (Health Officer), Mr. Houghton (manager of the company) the Herald, Customs, and Postal representatives, proceeded down to the vessel. After several enquiries had been made and the ship's doctor's report given, Dr. Lewis grantwi the steamer a clean bill of health, and the visitors were admitted on board. The purser, to whom we are indebted for late tiles of English, Capetown and Hobart papers, reports that the Kaikoura left Plymouth on the 29th May at 4 a.m., with 8. W. winds and cloudy weather, lasting to Teneriffe, arriving there on June 3, at 7.9 a.m. Coaled ana proceeded the same day at 4.23 p.m. Moderate N.E. winds and fine weather to Dakar, Cane Vtrde, where the steamer arrived on the 6th at 10.40 a.m., and embarked the passengers of the s.s. Port Douglas, wrecked on her voyage to Melbourne. Left Dakar the same day at .115 p.m., had light S.E. winds and squally, with rain, to the Line, on the 10th; thence, encountered moderate trades and fine weather till arrival in Table Bay, on June 19, at 6.45 p.m. Left the following day at 0.30 p.m., with strong westerly winds, high sea 3 and rainy weather along the Southern Ocean to July 2; then, two days moderate easterly wind and fine weather; thence to the 7th, moderate S. W. winds and squally, with rain, when it changed to fresh southerly wind and similar weather till sighting Maatzuyker light, on the Bth, at 10.34 p.m., and fresh southerly wind with rain up the coast, till arrival at Hobart on July 9. at 9 a.m. Discharged cargo, coaled, and proceeded the same day at 4.40 p.m., with strong S.S.E. winds and squally weather continuing till abeam of Cape Maria Van Diemen, at 1.40 a.m. on the 14th instant; thence, light S.E. wind, smooth sea and fine weather down the coast, till arrival off Rangitoto Reef, last evening. The total time occupied on the voyage has been 46 days 2 hours and 20 minutes, inclusive of I day 20 hours 39 minutes stoppages at the various ports, or actual steaming time of 44 days 5 hours, 41 minutes —a very creditable performance. The steamer brings 2406 tons of general cargo for all ports, 789 tons of which is for here. She will resume her voyage to the S<.uth on Saturday evening.
