AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the City Council [ was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. W. Crowther), and Messrs. Paterson, Hewson, Wright, Courteny, Laver, Swales, Dignan, Luks, Atkin, Holland, Grey, Farroll, Warren, Garratt, Julian, Kidd, and Dr. Walker. Municipal Association.— secretary of the Municipal Association wrote, intimating that Tuesday, the sth Jiily, had been appointed by the president 48 tfie date for the meeting of the Association in Wellington. On the motion of Mr. Dignan, it was decided that the Mayor and Town Clerk should attend the Conference. Drainage in England-street. —Mr. D. T. Parker wrote, asking where be could let the drainage run to off his property, the Sanitary Inspector having complained of it running into the channel in England-street. The Inspector reported thab the cost of laying a necessary drain would be about £12. Referred to the Streets Committee to report. Offer Withdrawn.—The clerk of the

Eden Terrace Road Board wrote stating that the Board had decided to withdraw its offer of £80 towards improving Eden and Manning streets, as six months had elapsed since the offer was made, and no steps had been taken to proceed' with the work. Referred to the ward members.

Street Accident.—Mr. R. Davis wrote stating that while driving in Nelson-street, on the sth May, the road caved in under his horse's feet, resulting in damage to his cart, and slight injuries to his horse. He asked the Council to recompense him. The City Engineer reported that there had been no indication of anything being wrong on the surface before the accident took place. A portion of the pipes were laid in made ground, and they had evidently been drawn out of place by the gradual settlement of the embankment and the falling of the earth from underneath. It was purely an accident. Referred to the engineer to make good the damage. Refuse Destruction.-— agent for Horsefall's Patent Refuse Destructor wrote offering to sell to the City Council the right of erecting a Destructor in Auckland. Received, the Mayor stating that he would inspect the destructor in Wellington and report on his return. Mount Eden Water Supply. — The Mount Eden Board intimated their desire to renew the present agreement for the supply of water to their district for a further term of three years from the 30th instant. Request to be complied with. Referred to trie Ward members. Offer to Rent.—Mr. C. Walker wrote requesting the Council to let lot 36, section 50, Picton-street, to him at a nominal rental.

Hannan drew attention to the necessity for more light in Chapel- thero being only the hotel lamp between his shop and Wellesley-street. The engineer -reported that a lamp placed a few chains off Victoriastreet would improve that part of Chapelstreet. Referred to the Ward members.

Ponsonhv Reservoir. Mr. A. Maguiro

wrote, refusing the Council's offer of £35 in settlement of his claim in connection with the Ponsonby reservoir, and stating that he would take other steps to secure his remedy. Tho Mayor said ho believed Mr. Maguire would be willing to refer the matter to the city engineer for arbitration, as he had previously offered to do so. the Legal Committee. Lamp Wanted.—Mr. Paterson presented a petition for a lamp at the corner of Whittaker Lane and Grafton Road. Streets Committee. — This committeo

recommended as followsl. Letter from A. T. Good, re permit to move and enlarge a wooden building, Vincent-street : that a permit be granted. 2. Letter from T. Jones, ie wall Karaka-street : that on Mr. Jones contributing the sum of £5, a wall bo built as per engineer's estimate of cost, viz., £12. The report was adopted. Legal Committee.—This committee recommended that applications bo invited by advertisement for a lady to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of tho assistant librarian. Adopted. Dredging Account.—The Engineer reported that the Harbour Board account for dredging at the mouths of sowers, as amended, was a reasonable one. The Mayor explainsd that the account was originally for £245, but was now reduced to £109. Payment of the account was authorised.
