LAW AND FOLICE.
POLICE COURT.— Wednesday. [Before Dr. Giles, K.M.] Vagrancy.Annie Lockie was charged with having insufficient lawful means or support. Sergeant-Major Pratt said the girl's father had been communicated with regarding this charge, and he had promised to call at the police station, but had nob done so. Dr. Giles said this was the first time accused had been brought before him, and he would like to give her another chance. She had been found sleeping out in the Domain night after night, and had rendered herself liable to three months imprisonment. Dr. Giles then dismissed the accused with a caution. H arbour Board By-laws.Robert Henry Keenan was charged with having leaving a cab unattended on Queen-street Wharf, on May 12. Dr. Giles said there were already six convictions against the accused on charges of a similar nature. Defendant was fined 10s and costs, or in default 10 days' imprisonment with hard labour. Illegitimate Child. — David Wright was charged with being the father of a European illegitimate child of which AKvine Muller was the mother, and having refused to provide for the support of such child Mr. B. W. Burton appeared for the complainant, and Mr. F. 13. Baume for the defendant. Alwine Muller deposed that she first met the defendant in Wellington in January, 1891, where she became very intimate with him, and accused promised to marry witness, Defendant then left for Auckland, whither witness followed him. Witness produced a letter and telegram purporting to be sent to her by the defendant. The defendant, on going into the witness box, deposed that the telegram had not been sent by him, and that he had not writton the letter. '1 he case was then adjourned for a fortnight in order to allow evidence for the defence being obtained. Application fob Protection Order.— Irene Wiggloworth applied for a protection order against her husbar-d, Frederick Wiggleworth. Mr, Matthews appeared on behalf of the complainant, and Mr. Mahony for the defendant. After hearing' the evidence, the case was dismissed.
