& TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB'S WINTER MEETING. Tiie Winter Meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club took place yesterday at their course at Devonport, the committee having met in the morning and resolved that the races should 011, though the weather then was not of favourable appearance, heavy rain having fallen during the night and early in the day. However, the sky cleared, and toward the afternoon the sun shone brilliantly, so that race-goers were encouraged, the attendance of the public at the meeting being considerably better than might have been expected. What with the continual rain on Monday and on Tuesday morning as well as the showers of yesterday afternoon, the lower part of the course was as heavy as it well could be, so that while the lawn and other high ground were surprisingly dry, the race track"'' was thoroughly sodden and slippery/ Some surprises were recorded, notably the double victory of Belmont, who, as lie had little jumping to do in the Hurdle Race, and was well served by his turn of speed, ran away from the field, rewarding his supporters with the excellent dividend of £17 14s, and again gaining a clever win in the Welter Handicap. Ida, after an excellent race, and a good display of horsemanship by Gallagher, won the Birthday Handicap easily. Stepper, who was the favourite for the Steeplechase, took the lead in the last half-mile of that race, and won as lie liked bv six lengths. He was in great condition,

and was well ridden by Fergus. The remarkable feature of the Steeplechase was the splendid race which Hurricane ran. The totalisators were worked with perfect satisfaction during the day, Mr. Kirkwood supplying the returns promptly, so that dividends were paid without unnecessary delay. There was 110 material loss of time 011 the part of the officers of the club, the last race being run at a reasonable hour; for the authorities, and especially Mr. R. Wynyard, the secretary, worked well for the success of the meeting in this as in other respects. Mr. Impey's band played on the lawn, and a luncheon was supplied at the grandstand by Mr. George Johnston. During the afternoon the sum of £'JI)S;> was invested in the totalisators. The following are the results of the race.? : — Maidicn Platk Handicap of 30sovs; the owner of the second horse to receive f.sovs from the stakes. One mil-. 00—Mr. B.
