ATHLETICS.

NORTHERN ATHLETIC CLUB. The second meeting of the Northern Athletic Club, the recently-established organisation for professional athletes, took place on Saturday, April 30, at the Domain Cricket Ground. An energetic committee carried out the programme of sports : Air. A. H. Trubshaw was the secretary; Messrs. G. Mcßride and Lyon, judges (the former acting in the absence of Mr. W. C. Walker); Mr. M.Foley, starter: and Mr. P. Quinlan, timekeeper. There was not a large attendance of the public. The following are the results of the sports 100 yds Race, for Boys. J. Tunny, 4yds 1 A. Hackett and Beere tied for tho honour of victor ludorum in connection with the recent Amateur Athletic Sports, and it was agreed to run ft 000 yards event to decide tho question. For many roasons this has had to bo postponed from time to time, but was decided on tho 26th April. Mr. J. Halyday acted as starter, and Mr. W. J. Speight as judge. Beere led the whole way, and won easily, liackott giving up at the last 50 yards. A smoke concert was held at the British Hotel on May IS for the purpose of presenting the medals won at the late Pine Island Regatta, and tho presentation of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association colours to Mr. M. Keefe, ft member of the Auckland Rowing Club. Mr. John Marshall, the president of the club, occupied tho chair. Messrs. A. Dacre, H. Jones, St. J. Clarke, G. E. Howard, and J. Meek (coxswain) were presented with the medals for members of tho Auckland Rowing Club under 21 years of age. Medals were also presented to Messrs. G. Barrett, A. N. Gibbons, R. Broberg, C. F. Minnitt, A. 11. Busby, A. Dacre, H. Cramond, and J. Graham.

The sports of the Ponsonby District School came off in the Domain' on the 29th April. The races, which were under the supervision of Mr. Benjamin Bailey (headmaster) and the teachers of the school, were run oIF without the slightest hitch. The hero of the day proved to be Lloyd Keals, who carried oil" the School Championship, Ladies' Bracelet, and High Jump in fine style. _ H. Ross secured first place in the Mile Walk and in the Quarter, while N. Main, who ran most pluckily throughout, was second in these events and third in another. At. the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club's meeting, at Timaru on Wednesday, the 4th May, Norman L. Gurr won the 100 yards (Usees.), the half-mile flat (2min. I sth sec.), the quarter mile (53 4-i?h see 3.), the '2."/) yards Hat (28 l-sth sees.), and was unplaced in the GOO yards handicap, Rutherford (40 yards) and three others beating him. urr's splendid running was quite a feature of the meeting. Rees won the steeplechase. ladies' trophy, and Postlewaite easily won ho I'2oyds hurdles (17£ sees.). At the South Canterbury A.A.C. Sports on May 5 the Half-mile was won by Whelan (OOyils); Rutherford (40vds), 2. Time, 2in. L. llayward (9vds) won the 150 yds in 15 3-sth s. : Bowie, 2. J. Ford (200 yds) won the Two-mile Walk; Fielder, 2: in 15m. 1!) l-sth s. Fish (Byds) won the 440 yds Hurdles in tilHs. ; Maloon, 2. Sumpter (18yds) the '250 and 130 (9yds) start—the former in 26 4 sth s., and the latter in 12.\s. C. G. Rees the Mile Race: Whelan, 2; in 4m. 49 3-sth s. Bowie (45vds) the Quarter Flat in 525., and Fielder (440 yds) the Two Mile Flat, Whelan 2. in 9m. 555. C. G. Rees carries off the championship given for long distance events this year; and l'osthlethwaite R. Turnbull's cup, for most points in jumping; and Gustavus Jones Mr. Mcl'herson's challenge clock, for otlieials' race. On Saturday evening, May 7, at the British Hotel club-room, the prizes won at the last Amateur Athletic Club Meeting were presented by one of the vice-presidents, Mr. B. J. Esam. After the Athletic Club's prizes were presented Mr. Esain kindly presented the West End Rowing Club's medals to Messrs. Lowry, Wells, Oswald, and R. Wilson. Some music, songs, <fcc., wound up a very pleasant evening. The football season for 1892 was inaugurated in Auckland on Saturday, May 14, under circumstances not altogether favourable as far as the weather was concerned ; but, with regard to those circumstances over which the committee of management and the players had any control everything went off splendidly.
