Mr. Lyle has petitioned the Governnor to grant a respite for a week in Deemings case, to enable an appeal to be made to the Privy Council. Mr. Lyle informed the Governor that the appeal had reached London on Friday last. Deeming is breaking down under the close confinement. DEATH OF A BUSHRANGER. Melbourne, May 17. Russell, alias the Black Douglas, the well-known bushranger, has died in Bendigo gaol. DISTRESS IN MELBOURNE. Melbourne, May 17. In the House of Assembly, Mr.' Gillies said the Opposition were prepared to play a high game, recognising that the interests of the colony should come first. NEW SOUTH WALES FINANCES. Sydney, May 17. The Hon. J. See, Colonial Treasurer, states that owing to the success attending the recent issue of Treasury bills, the Government will not require to go to the London market for further money this year. OBITUARY. * Brisbane, May 17. The death is announced of Mr. Walter Adams, M.L.A.
