The chairman submitted the report of the committee's proceedings for the past year, which showed that everything had passed off very smoothly and pleasantly during the past year. The assistant teacher. Miss M. E. Dempsey, resigned, and was replaced by Miss A. Walters, and the committee have much pleasure in testifying that both the head and assistant teachers had given general satisfaction. The Board, acknowledging the necessity, promised an enlargement of the school if the Kauri Timber Company would grant a lease of the ground (one acre)' Oil which the school now stood. This the Kauri Timber Company consented to do, yet despite numerous applications to the Board of Education (although this was granted over twelve mouths ago), we can get nothing further done. The secretary was then called on to read the receipts and expenditure for the past year, which showed a credit balance in bank of £14 lis 10.1, and ISs 3d in treasurer's hands. 'The following gentlemen were duly proposed and seconded as members for the ensuing year :—Messrs. H Layeock, 1. Driffill W. Stringwell, W. Ball, J. Gamble, W. Furl>er, and A. O. ARATAPU. Twenty householders attended the meeting at Aratapu, on April 25, to hear the report of the retiring school committee and elect a committee for the current year. Mr. W. J. Bassett was voted to the chair. The chairman's report referred to one or two painful duties which the committee had had to perform, and to the determination come to at the last annual meeting to secure the Boards assistance towards the fencing and draining of the ground. After much correspondence, and mainly through the efforts of Mr.Buckhurst, the Board had given the committee a grant of £35, which sum had been expended. An outlet was now required for the drains, and the County Council had been asked to open out the Church-street dram. The platform round the school, which had been very expensive, had been removed, and a contract let for the burning and spreading ol clay around the building at a cost ot ±,12. Lhe planting of shelter trees should be the next work 'The children had collected £14 lor a school treat, and of this £10 had been spent in food ; the balance was to be used in purchasing prizes for the winners of _ the races as soon as the list was received from the late teacher. The attendance of scholars had not been satisfactory, for out of a roll number of 140 or 150 it was a great trouble to get an average attendance of 111, and if this average were not maintained, the school woulcf probably lose the services of the fourth teacher. They had made an example lof one lad for non-attondance, and -would

have pressed others had they not; found the roll improperly marked, two lads being marked present up to the 18th March, one of whom had been absent for a week before Christmas, and the other from the 17th February. The teacher's explanation was not satisfactory, and he left. The roll number at present is 63 boys and 82 girls, with an average attendance of 44.8 boys and 60.9 girlstotal, 1057. The balance-sheet showed a balance from last year of £21 Os 6d; received from Board, £55; rent of ground, £5 0s 9d ; £81 Is 3d. The chief items of expenditure were for draining and fencing, £38; cleaning, £19 12s, with a balance in bank of £1612s lOd. Mr. Woollams spoke in reference to the outlet drain, and moved that the opening of the Church Road drain be pressed upon' the County Council, and that the chairman of the present meeting inform the Council of the wish of the householders. Mr. G. E. Smith, seconded, and the motion was carried. The following gentlemen were nominated for committeemen and received the number of votes affixed to their names :—Messrs. W. Corkill, 15; S. Wilson, 13; T. Neild, 15; T. Bassett, 17; W. Donaldson, 17; W. J. Bassett, 16; G. E. Smith, 8; G. Mills, 8; S. Webb, 8; and A. Sowter, 7. After drawing lots, the chairman gave his casting vote in favour of Mr. Smith, and the first seven gentlemen were declared elected. Mr. Nield returned thanks for his election, and warned householders that the committee _ would enforce the compulsory clauses this year without hesitation. Mr. A. Sowter asked that the meetings of committee might be thrown open to the public, and was informed by Messrs. Neild, Corkill, and Bassett that the committee would be glad of the attendance of the public and press at any time. The new committee afterwards met, and Mr. Thomas Neild was elected chairman, Mr. T. Bassett declining nomination, and Mr. Wilson was elected secretary, two or three others declining nomination.—[Own Correspondent.]

McGarvey, Creeke, Wright, Brown, Buckworth, Simpkins, and Wilkins were duly elected, these being the only persons nominated. —[Own Correspondent.]

HUKERENUI NORTH. The election of a school committee for this district took place on the 25th April. The meeting was not very prolonged, the business having been transacted in less than half an hour. The attendance was very small, and the retiring committee were re-elected. There is a talk of irregularities having attended the election, and some are wondering whether a fresh election will not be held.— [Own Correspondent.] TE AROHA. The annual meeting of householders for the election of a school committee was held on Monday, April 25, in the schoolroom. About 40 persons were present, and Mr. J. Mills was called to the chair. Also to the satisfactory condition of the school, and expressed the unqualified satisfaction of the committee with the very zealous manner in which the teachers have preformed their duties. The number of scholars on the roll is 175, and the average attendance 137*9. The committee regretted that the average was so low compared with the number on the roll, and hoped that during the present year the parents will endeavour to take every advantage of the educational advantages so liberally provided by the colony. The treasurer's statement showed the receipts to have been £65 10s 6d, and the expenditure £37 18s lOd, leaving a credit balance of £27 lis Bd. Messrs.
