CARRIAGE OF MAILS TO AUSTRALIA.
Press Association. Telegraph.—Copyright.
London, February 25. The Pall Mall Gazette suggests that the time allowed for the carriage of mails to and from Australia should be shortened, and that the mails should be conveyed all the way by sea, so as to avoid the excessive charges incurred by their transport through Italy and France.
Mr. J. Henniker-Heaton is urging Parliament to set up a committee to inquire into the cost of the carriage of mails to the Australian colonies. He points out that under the existing arrangements the railway companies receive half the money, Italy and France pocketing £60,000 per annum.
