MANGONUI SCHOOL SPORTS.
The friends of the children attending the public school resolved to give them a day's sport and picnic before the school reopened ; therefore a goodly number assembled on the favourite resort, Cooper's Beach, on Saturday, the 30th January, when racing and various games took place. There were fourteen events on the programme, and were well contested by only those boyß and girls attending the school. At the usual time dinner was served to all there, when, after a reasonable time had passed, sports began again, and were kept up until after four 0 clock. As the local mill shuts down on Saturdays at 12.20, a number of the men availed themselves of the opportunity of going out and enjoying themselves along with the children. Mr. Houston, M.H.R. (chairman), S. Wrathall, and T. Bcrglmn (members of the committee) were indefatigable in the work of providing amusement. At about five o'clock the bell-call brought all together, when there was a really good tea served up by Mesdames Houston, Kingston, Irvine, S. Wrathall, Ross, Campbell, and others, who did all they could to provide for the comfort of their guests, and it is not saying too much that they succeeded. There were four money prizes' to every race, and those who could not secure a money prize got a packet of lollies. Subjoined are the results : — 100 yds Race, senior boys.—Nine entries.
