There was but one slight break away after the starter took the lot in charge, and then the flag fell to a capital start. R6vdrend was quickest on his feet, and led the, way, just clear of The Admiral, Common, and Orvieto, at whose heels came Cuttlestone and Patrick Blue, sido by side, with Jinspliorus and Mimi in the rear. The French colt made the running at a warm pace, and retained his lead till Hearing the distance, though several changes, of position had been taking pla among those behind liim. Common had, at an early stage, run up into second place, with Patrick Bluo, Orvieto, The Admiral, and Mimi alternately in closest attendance on him. At the live iurlong post Lord Zetland's colt was doim with, and at the home bend Orvieto ami Mimi both cried a go, this leaving KtSverend still in front, a length ahead ot the favourite, whom Barrett hail been riding hard for some distance. At this juncture St. Simon of the Hock crept up to Common's girths, and amidst tremendous excitement the pair challenged rWverend, the trio running locked together halfway from the distance home, while Bosphorun added to the interest, by coming with a brilliant run. Gradually, however, Common got his head in front, anil drawing away in the last few strides, he won a splendid race by a' length from Reverend, with St. Simon of the Hock be a ten only a length for second place, and Bosphorus (placed fourth) only the samo distance behind Colonel North's colt. Mind, who sadly disappointed her friends, was fifth, sixth lengths away; Orvieto, sixth. Time, 3m. 14 2-hth s. Value ot the stakes to the winner, £4300.

The amount of the totalisator tax paid in to the Colonial Treasury by the Auckland Racing Club, over their recent Spring Meeting, was £171 lis 3d. In answer to several correspondents, we may say that the weights for" the Auckland Cup and Steeplechase are not due until the 3rd of December. Mr. Mark, secretary of the Auckland Trotting Club, notifies that ponies will be measured at Potter's Paddock every Wednesday up to Christmas, between the hours of three and half-past four p.m. Ponies entered at the Onslow Trotting Club's Meeting, not having certificates, may be measured tomorrow, between three and half-past four p.m. It is stated that prior to the running of the Maribyrnong Plato Mr. D. O'Brien was offered and refused £800 for his two-year-old colt Survivor, who, I may remark, is a sou of Robinson Crusoe— Rustic Lass The Wanganui Jockey Club paid away £988 in stakes over eir recent Spring Meeting. The club made a profit of £190 over the gathering. The will of the late Mr. William Branch, the well-known Victorian bookmaker, has been lodged in the Probate Office, and submitted for proof. Testator died on the 26th September last, having made his will on the 27th Julj, 1880. His property is valued at £14,909—£14,325 realty and £644 personalty —which is distributed among his widow and relatives. A pamphlet hasbeon published in England on the subject of the starting. The writer would place the starter on a portable stand or cart (the latter would be preferable) from which he would have far greater command over his horses, with the red flag in an unaltered position, standing out some four or five feet from the back of the cart, and lowered by a spring worked by the starter's foot as soon as the horses were in line. The elevated position of the flag would undoubtedly give the jockeys a better opportunity of seeing it, while its fixed position should do away with any uncertainty on their part as to whether it had fallen or not. Another advantage would be that the starter would have the free use of his hands to take notes regarding any offender against his orders, and would thus place him in a better Position to substantiate his charges against the refractory ones. A similar plan was tried at Rand wick a few days ago, when Mr. William Gannon was starter: but it did not work to satisfaction, and was abandoned. Tho privileges in connection with the Takapuna Jockey Club's Spring Meeting are to be offered by auction at Messrs. Tonics and Co.'s mart, on Friday next, at noon. The Southern hurdle racer, Little Arthur, who was recently taken over to Victoria, has been brought back to Christchurch.

IN-AND-OUT RUNNING AT KLLERSLIE. TO THE SPORTING JtDITOII. Sir,—Are you aware if any steps are likely to be taken to demand an inquiry from the owners of homes that showed reversal of form on the second clay's running at tho late A.R.C. Meeting? The public were the sufferers, and such being the ease, it is only fair that the committee should take steps to prevent a repetition. One or two, it is rumoured, were to be called upon, but if the matter is properly probed, something nearer twtnty-two would be the correct number, as there were glaring cases of inconsistent running on both days. The committee of the A.R.C. have a , duty to perform, and why should they shirk it?-»I am, &c., Fiat Lux.
