: Cruelty to a Horse.—Stanley Edward Vnile, a youth of 17 years, admitted a chargo of having driven a horse in a milk cart while the animal was suffering from a sore shoulder. Sergeant-Major Pratt said ohis matter had been brought under the notice of the police by Mr. Redgate, Inspector for the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Mr. Redgate had heard of the horse being badly ill-treated, and being unable to get hold of the animal himself, _ communicated with the police. In consequence of this, Constable liasletfc examined the horse, when he found it in the milk cart in Symonds-street on Wednesday night suffering from very severe sores, and therefore arrested the defendant. The owner was .Mr. Charles Nicholls, Mangere, and according to the defendant's statement he had known of the bad state the horse was in. Constable Haslobt gave evidence to the above effect, and added that when arrested the defendant said he had told his employer that he would not drive the horse again in the condition it was in. The horse, it seemed, was only sent out at night and nob during daylight. The defendant gave evidence, and stated that it was by the instructions of his employer, who knew the state the horse was in, that he had taken it out. The horse had not been in a bad state during the whole of the live weeks do- ; fendant had been in Mr. Nicholl's employ- ! tnent. The cause of the sores had been a rough collar. The Bench adjourned the case till 'Monday.next, to allow the police to lay an information against the owner, the present defendant; being released on his promise to appear on that day.
