His book is no better nor worse than dozens of similar publications. Worthy of note is only the preface, wherein lie murders the Queen's English trying to demonstrate that he is really a first-class player. A chess club was formed some time ago in a small New England town, and as is Renerally the ease in provincial places the meetings were held in a room in the . Y.M.C.A building. Recently the fact developed that some young men had committed the heinous offence of playing chess on Sunday, whereupon the club not only lost the privilege of the room, but the evil-doers were taken to task by the minister in his Sunday sermon and likened to " black sheep," and told that thev are " girded with the cuirass of sin."— N.Y.
