THE ENGLISH CENSUS RETURNS.
Accojsdtno to a return laid upon the table of the House of Commons, the total number of persons in England and Wales on the
night of April 5 last was 29,001,018. This shows an increase of 3,036,572, or 11.05 per cent, upon the figures for 18S1.
The proportion of females to males, which has been steadily increasing since 1851, is now 100'4 to 100, the figures in 1881 being 105-5 to 100 ; in 1871, 105-4 to 100 ; in 1801, 103-3 to 100; and in 1851, 10.4-2 to 100. The total number of males enumerated on April 5 last was 14,051),340, and of females 14,950,542. The rate of increase during the decennium was 11"2 for males and 32*1 for females. The number of families recorded in 1891 was 14(3,'J0.), showing an increase of 513,708, or 91 per cent, since 1881. This increase is considerably less than that of the population; and, while the average number of individuals in a family was 40 in 1881, in 1891 it was 4*7. The number of inhabited houses has increased by 021,183, or 12 9 per cent. ; whilst tho number of uninhabited houses and houses in course of construction has declined, the former from 380,0715 to 380,117, and the latter from 40,414 to 38,407.
