Cambridge, Wednesday " The ordinary monthly meeting nt"the Borough Council was held at tliu ollice 01 Monday afternoon. Present: .Messrs .1 H Priestley (Mayor), James Hallev, '.Ja'mej Webber, John Robertson, A. Bach, and.l. S. Bond. Letters were received from the Town Clerks of the Devonport, Onehun-a and Birkenhead Borough Councils with re"f". l-ence to the payments of fees to clerks oi licensing committees. In the case of each of the above named Boroughs, the duties of licensing clerks are performed by the respective town clerks. The question of the payment ot Mr. Kirk, held over from last meeting, was then considered. Some members thought that a.« the Council had 110 voice in the appointment of Mr. Kirk, and as they considered hew paid by the Department of .Justice for hi-, work, his account should not lie paid. On the other side, it was pointed out by Mr. Hally that it would he manifestly unfair to stop payment for services already rendered, without due notice being given. " This view was also taken by the .Mayor. On its kin: pointed out that Mr. Kirk's account was for the year ended 39th June last, and not for the current year, opposition to its payment ceased, audit was unanimously resolved, mi the motion of Mr. Bond, seconded by Mr. Hally, "That Mr. Kirk account be passed for payment." It was also resolved, "Ik Mr. Kirk be notified that it is tiie/iiteiit:w\ of the Cambridge Borough Council to apply to have the Town Clerk appointed as clerk to the licensing committee. A reply was received from Colonel Fraser, acknowledging receipt of Council's resolution in favour of authority being given to Counties and Boroughs to go 011 tii» open market for loans, and promising to use his efforts to get accessary clauses inserted in Bills now before the House. A letter was read from Mr. J. Parr, Hamilton, asking fora copy of the Borough balance-sheet. Resolved to inform Mr. Parr that every facility would be afforded anyone desirous of making a copy of same at the office. Mr. Bach drew attention to the state of the fencing round the Government paddock, and urged that the Council should either take down the inside fence round the trees, or put the same in a state of repair. The chairman of works was asked to see to the matter.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN' COKKKSI'OXDESW.] Rotokua, Wednesday. Considerable consternation prevailed here yesterday afternoon for the safety of two Maori ladies who were known to have hollowed a boat lor the purpose of attending a tangi 011 Mokoia island, and were supposed to be on their way back when the boat capsized. Several people asserted positive!* that they saw the white sails of tiie bout about two miles from shore, and suddenly every sign of the little craft disappeared. The alarm was quickly given, and a canoe manned by three natives went to the rescue, but their progress to the supposed scene ol the disaster was slow, which made the excitement 011 shore all the greater. After reaching the spot the canoe appeared to hover round, meanwhile efforts ere made to get oars for another boat to start off, and without waiting too long, started away wita a paddle, the beach and slopes of l'ukeroa being lined with spectators. When the canoe returned quite a crowd rushed to meet it only to learn that an optical delusion hivt occurred, the supposed white sails being a swarm of sea-gulls. Immediately the boat scare "was over, a native arrived on horseback from "lianarewarewa with the news that a buggy ace'-, dent had occurred, and that Mesdames Men and Cahill, accompanied by three ot ,tn< latter's children, had met with a ser { o ''* mishap.
