THE ART GALLERY.
TO the editor. Sir— see, that the Art Gallery is to bt enlarged and designs invited. Surely the original designer, Mr. Grainger, of' Melbourne, is entitled to carry out the work. New designs might do too much transmogrification in connecting the addition with the original. St. Peter's at Rome, like many old buildings, has suffered throughout time for the want of the first designer's ideas. Surely it cannot be hard to get the architect or give the small job to some one who will carry out faithfully the needed addition in harmony with the approved and established building, which, however, to my mind is no ornament to the city.—l am, etc., W. F. Hammond, Vice-president of A.I. of A.
