The locally owned schooner Saxon is now on her way to Auckland from Picton with a load of potatoes consigned to Mr. J, T. Hendry. At the Ctuitoms yesterday the schooner Waiwera, Captain H. Pankow, was cleared out for Napier and Hailed for that port with a cargo of 4) tons drain tiles and 22 tons fireclay. The schooner Agnes Donald, lately hence with timber for Wellington, is to bring back a cargo of produce from Blenheim. The new river steamer Paeroa, which has now been painted and coppered by her builder, Mr. C. Bailey, is to be launched to-morrow morning at 8.IX) o'clock. Company's prospectus is issued for a new steamship company to engage in the trade between this and the Australian colonies. It is to have a nominal capital of £250,000 in {50,000 shares of £5 each, the first issue being only 12,000 shares. Of these 2000 are to be allotted to Mr. J. C. Ellis, whose steamer Jubilee it is proposed to buy at a price hereafter to be fixed by arbitration. The provisional directors are men of well-known business standing in Australia. The prospectus states One of the objects of the company is obvious, namely, for providing an additional first-class steam service between Australia and New Zealand, which lias been found to be absolutely necessary to keep do\yn fares and freight to a reasonable rate._ It is not intended to oppose any existing line of steamers, but to fix the rates of lares and freights upon a fairly legitimate paying basis. The promoters recommend this venture to shippers generally, but more particularly to agriculturalists and their agents in New Zealand ; for, as shareholders, they will be entitled to priority of apace and the lowest freights and passenger rates, at the same time securing transit for their produce to the Australian markets at regular intervals. It will be patent to the producers of New Zealand that it is to their interests to make a certainty of a second steam service between Australia and New Zealand being continued, as any increase of freight must necessarily fall on them. These remarks are also applicable to the travelling public.
