Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.— THE TIMES ON" AUSTRALIA. London, September 1. The Times is publishing a series of articles on the resources of Australia. In a leader commenting on the facts disclosed in these articles, it says the results have never been exceeded in the same space of time, and urges the colonies to take no heed of pessimists. Courage and enterprise have worked magic, and the colonies have a marvellous record. THE WRECK OF THE WALLARAH. London, September 1. Cargo to the value of £2000 has been saved from the steamer Wallarah, wrecked on Dassen Island. The vessel and the remainder of her cargo were sold by auction for £2000. SOCIAL LIFE IN AUSTRALIA, London, September 1. Mr. Francis Adams, Australian journalist, in an article in the Fortnightly Review on " Social Life in Australia," says the native-born Australians are of a high-strung temperament, alternately displaying languor and activity, somewhat tainted with cruelty. He describes Melbourne as pagan, while convictism is not yet extinct •in Sydney. Mr. Adams asserts that the Sydney Bulletin is a terror to the opulent class.
