SCHOOL HOLIDAYS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sill,--Mr. Muir has given notice that at) the next meeting of the Board of Education he will move an alteration in Regulation 18, which lias reference jo school holidays. _■ His intention appears to be to make holidays uniform, both in town and country, throughout the whole of the province. To accomplish this, according to Herald's report, he would give an aggregate of ten weeks' holidays, in addition to various days, throughout the year, as follow Christmas, six weeks Easter, one; midwinter, one; last week in June, and last week in September. I have been woudering what is to be gained by such alteration, on the supposition that the Board agrees to it. At present it is optional with committees, outside Auckland, to give either seven weeks or nine weeks holidays throughout the year, according to their pleasure or to circumstances, and a good many members of committees believe that very lengthy holidays are injurious rather than otherwise tu children. And, acting according to the present regulations, surely committees can' arrange about the holidays Quite satisfactorily without any fresh legislation on the subject. I have been chairman of a school committee for a great many years, and out committee have found no difficulty at all in fixing the holidays. Par better let well alone; and I for one would protest against these constant attempts to alter rules and regulations that have been found .to work efficiently. I hope the Board will still allow country committees a voice "in the matter of holidays, as to whether vacations' shall be the minimum or maximum length.— X am, &c., William Morgan* Pukekohe East,
