THE SHOP HOURS BILL.

A mektiso of tobacconists was held yesterday afternoon in the wholesale store

of Messrs. H. E. Partridge and Co., Queen-

street to consider the provisions of the Shop Hours' Bill in so far as they affected • their particular trade. Over thirty were ' present, including several ladies, and Mr. , H. E. Partridge was voted to the chair. He explained that he had received a letter 1 from Mr. C. E. Batkin, of Wellington, I drawing attention to the fact that the | exemption under the Shop Hours' Bill did not include tobacconists' shops, and point- ' ing out that if these places of business were ' compelled to close at the hours specified in ' the BUI the effect would be to drive the , trade into the hands of publicans and others . who were exempted. After consideration, the following resolution was adopted on the motion of Mr. Bond (of Messrs. Williamson ! and Co.) seconded by Mr. Ellison :— " That ' a petition be drawn np and sent to the Auckland members at Wellington request- ' ing them to oppose tobacconists being in- ' eluded in the Shop Hours' Bill, and that a committee consisting of Messrs. Ivil, Dowd- ' ing, and the mover, be appointed to wait on all wholesale houses trading in tobacconists' goods, and ask for their signature to the petition, and their influence in opposing the Shop Hours Bill, so'far as regards the tobacco trade." Mr. Whitehead suggested that instead of the meeting adopting a motion relating to the tobacco trade alone, it should affirm the broad general principle of the freedom of all tradesmen, and the members of their families to carry on their businesses as long as they liked, whatever protection might be extended to employes. After some conversational discussion, it was | decided to adhere to the original resolution, the chairman remarking that the meeting was simply one of tobacconists, and that Mr. Whitehead could, if he wished, convene a meeting of all tradesmen to carry out the object he had in view.
