THE AGENT-GENERALSHIP.
That old rumour about Mr. Buckley and the Agent-Generalship possesses persistent vitality, notwithstanding reiterated Ministerial disclaimers. I was assured today by a promr.ient member of the House that I might take it as a safe "tip" that Mr. Buckley was to be the new Agent-General, and that he will be succeeded as AttorneyGeneral and leader of the Legislative Council by Mr. Perceval. I may observe that the Ministerial disclaimers seldom go beyond an assurance that nothing is settled yet, bub aa I meiitiohed to you the lasb time I referred to the matter, Mr. Buckley himself told me it would nob at all suit him to take the AgencyGeneral. It may, of course, be that bhie referred only to the circumstances as they then exisbed—bhat is to say, the Parliament being still in session—ana that when the session is over the objection on his part to ,fche appointment may be found to have disappeared. At all events, the report is again revived, and those who promulgate it will bake no denial of ibs correctness. I myself am nob in a position to express any opinion on the probabilities eibher way.
