George Beaney, senior surgeon to thd Melbourne Hospital. ; Dr. Beaney has bequeathed the bulk of his property, which is considerable, to chanties in Melbourne and the city of Canterbury, in Kent. THE COMMONWEALTH BILL, i Melbourne, July 1. y In the House of Assembly, last night, the Premier proposed a motion expressing general approval of the Commonwealth Bill. A discussion on the motion is proceeding. THE NORTHERN"TERRITORY. Adelaide, July 1. t Government favour a proposal to shift the boundary of the northern territory from the 26th parallel of south latitude, which is the line of demarcation between it and South Australia proper, to the 20th parallel. : QUEENSLAND PARLIAMENT. Brisbane, July 1. Parliament opened, yesterday. . The Speech from the Throne made reference to federation, and regretted that the prosperity of the colony had been seriously affected by the recent shearing difhculty, owing to which the expenditure had considerably exceeded the revenue. In consequence of the increased expenditure the Government were now called on to observe the strictest economy. PAYMENT~OF~ % Sydney, July 1. ; A curious point has cropped up in connection with the payment of members. It appeared that payment only applied to the last Parliament, and that the new House will require to pass it. again for themselves. , Sir H. arkes adheres to the opinion that the payment of members was ,only in force up to the time of dissolution, but he has stated a case to the AttorneyGeneral for decision. This is a serious matter for the labour party, and many others because, although 1 the Lower House may pass the payment again, there is reason to believe the Couft'c; will reject it.
