AUCKLAND WINTER MEETING.
GREAT NORTHERN STEEPLECHASE. The A.R.C. Meeting which is fixed to take place to-morrow, gives every promise of furnishing one of the besl; afternoon's sport that has ever taken place at Ellcrslie at this season of the year, and the fact of the gates'being thrown open free to the public, together with tho facilities' offered by the Railway Department to country visitors, should have the effect of drawing a splendid attendance, if the weather proves fine. The big event of the afternoon is, of course, the Great Northern Steeplechase, and as it is anticipated that at least ten out of the twelve horses, engaged will go to the post, the very greatest interest will be centred in the contest. Thk follosving are the horses engaged, with their probable riders : —

Takapu still maintains his place firmly as favourite, and 2"s to 1 would be freely taken if offered about him, but 6 to 4 is the best quotation obtainable from the ring. Which horse is likely to turn out tho selected of Williamson's four—lngorangi, Nap, Omata, mid Parnell—is a bit of a puzzle to backers. In the early part of the week Omata was considered to be the likely oue, but an opinion seeins to be gaining ground that Parnell will prove to be the one on which tho main supporters of tho stable will rely. PREVIOUS WINKERS.
The first event of to-morrov/'s programme— the Hurdle Race—is to be started punctually at oho p.ui., and the Great Northern Steeplechase has been placed fourth on the card.
