SPORTING.

THE AUCKLAND RACING-CLUB'S WINTER MEETING. [by phaeton.] With excellent acceptances and entries, the A.R.C. Meeting to-day gives promise of furnishing one of the best afternoon's sport that has been brought off at Ellerelie. Following the usual custom in connection with the Winter Meeting, the gates are to be thrown open free to the public, and this should ensure a good attendance. The first race is to be started at one p.m., and special trains will leave the Auckland station at noon. 12.30, and 2,10 p.m. The musical portion of the programme will be rendered by the fiue, band under the leadership of Mr. J. Imtieyy while the catering at the grandstands being in the hands of Mr. T. MeEwin is a guarantee that everything in that respect''will be carried out satisfactorily. . •

The following are my notes and anticipation on the various events :-— Hurdle Race of loosovs. Two miles. ' . " stlb . stlb Sentinel .. .. 11 12 Cloth of Gold .. 910 Nap.. .. . ;.;.. 10 fi Try Fluke .. ..9 9 Bryan O'Lynn .. 10 0 Good Day .. ..97 Criminal .. .. 10 0 Salute .. ..8 5 Theorem .. ■.. 10 0 Theorem and Sentiuel will, I think, fight out the finish, and to separate them I shall select Theorem to furnish tho winner. 31a , den Steeplechase, about two miles and α-hulf.-■at lb-, st lb Bryan O'Lynn .. 12 3 Dan .. .. li isf Highland Liiddie 11 12 Mistletoe.. .. 11 9 Neck or Nothing 11 12 Justice .. .. 11 9 Ival .. ..1112 Karewa u 9 Yardman .. .. 11 12

A good deal of uncertainty exists as to what will compose the field for this event. Yardman is, however,, a pretty sure starter, and he reads the most likely winner.

Welter Handicap of 80aovs., one mile. . st.lb. st.llv r.eorina .. .. 12 11 Lonely .. .'. 10 7 Dolosa .. ~ 32 O.TeKooti.. „ 30 7 Itigorinn ■.. .. 11 6 Warrior ..■■■•• .. 10 4 Loch Ness.. .. 11 3 Bou Voyage .. 10 4 Priscilla .. ..10 9 Oiukei' .. .. 10 0 «nak« .. .. 10 8 Shaughraun «• .. 10 0 Criminal .. .. 10 8 Macaroni .. .. 10 0 If I was sure that, Lonely was himself I should select him, but as be is said to have been recently suffering from influenza, Dolosa may prove the safest to trust. Qkeat Northern Steeplechase of 300sovs, about three miles and a-lialf.

st lb st lb Sentinel .. .. 12 o Ival 910 Ingorangi .. ..11 7 Bit-o'-Blue.. .. 910 Nap.. .. ..10 7 Yum Yum.. ..9 0 Omata .. ■ .. 10 3 Duadine .. ..0 9 Takapu ... .. 10 0 Neck-or-Nothing.. 9 7 Tarnell .. .. 911 Kate.. .. ..97 There can be no question that on paper Takapu is well entitled to the position of favourite, which he occupies for this race, for on all hands it is admitted-he should

have been returned the winner of the Wanganui Steeplechase last week. He is in the pink of condition, and in the hands of H. Pell will be steered by a most capable horseman. In the event of no further rain falling

Sentinel maybe expected to show a bold front, notwithstanding his heavy impost, for he is in great heart: but if ho is started in the Hurdle Race, his chance in this race may bo seriously imperilled. Yum Yum may have an outside show: but looking the matter fairly in the face, I must say that I am veiry loyal to the chance of Takapu, and if he is beaten the top-weight may be the one to accomplish it.

Selling Steeplechase, about three miles. . sfclb sitlb Karewa .. •.. 11' 4 Jim , .. :. 9 7 Justice .. ~ 10 18 Bestorrah ..9 7 Relation .. ..10 6 Off Chance „ 9 7 Kapai .. .. .. 9 7 I shall select Jim to furnish-the winner in this race. Ladies' Bracelet; one mile. stlb ■ ' stlb Leonna .. .. 12 2 Ingorina.. .. 11 5 Theorem .. .. 11 13 Dolosa .. .. 11 3 Lad .. ... ..1113 PrisciUa.. ..10 10 Chance .. .. 11 7 This event is to some extent dependent on the running in the Winter Handicap, and I shall leave it to my readers to solve on the course. Mr. J. O. Evitb arrived yesterday by the s.s. Tarawera for the purpose of attending the A.R.C. Winter Meeting, tattersall's club. There was a large attendance at Tattersail's last evening, Mr. L. A. Levy presiding. A fair amount of business was transacted, but it was chiefly confined to small lines. Theorem still maintained his position firmly us favourite for the Hurdle Race, and was in request at 60 to 25, but 30 to 20 was the best offer. The double, Theorem and Takapu, was quoted at 25 to 3, but did not lead to business. There was a disposition to support Yum Yum for the Steeplechase at outside prices, and she wasi conpled with several horses in the Hurdle Race. A double of 100 to 5 Criminal and Takapu was booked, but a request for Sentinel and the latter met with no response from the fielders. The following werotue prices quoted on the Hurdles and Steeplechase :— Hurdle Race. 30 to 20 axst Theorem «0 to 30 Sentinel 40 to 5 Nap 80 to 20 Bryan O'Lynn r>o to 10 Criminal 100 to 12 Cloth of Gold CO to 10 Good Day 25 to 5 Try Fluke 60 to 6 Salute . Blue 100 to 1+ Yum Yum 50 to 15 Duadine . 75 to 15 Ival 200 lo 10 Neck or Nothing 200 to 10 -Kate [Since the aboye was written, a steady rain has set in, with every prospect of continuing, and the Stewards, under the circumstances, will no doubt have to postpone the races.] • .
