.■■.,;.■".';-,... ■» ..' .; . The Auckland Hospital andNcharitable Aid Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs.'C.. Atkin (chairman), J. Swales, P. Dignan.J. M. Lennox, R.Udy, J. Bollard, A. Kidd, and 0. Mays. New Member.—lt was announced that the chairmen of the Road Boards and representatives "of the County of Eden had nominated Mr. W. T. J. Bell to succeed Mr. booseman as a member of the Board. On the motion of the Chairman, the nomination was confirmed, and Mr. Bell took his seat. Hospital Repoet.—The Medical Superintendent reported that the inmates of the institution numbered 74 men and 28 women. The Koch Lymph.—Dr. Collins informed the Board through Mr. Garland that he had obtained a small quantity of Dr. Koch's tuberculine, and was using it on two patients jat the Hospital. They were doing extremely well. Iα answer to Mr. Lennox, the Chairman said the patient Bourke had progressed favourably up till Friday last. In connection with this matter the following letter was received from Captain J. S. Guthrie, aide-de-camp to the Governor:—" lam directed by His Excellency to say that lie has learned with great satisfaction that i'i has been found possible to comply with John Bourke's wish to be inoculated with the Koch lymph. If not giving: too much trouble, it would be' agreeable to His Excellency if ■ those in the employment, of the Board at the Costley Home will let him know'how Bourke progresses under the treatment." In answer to the Chairman, Dγ, King said he would undertake to suoply His Excellency with the desired information. House Committee's Report.—The House Committee recommended ae follows:—1. That Nurses J. M. James, IV Smith, Margaret White, and-Anne J. Car law be retained for a second year at a salary of £20 per year. 2. That Miss Gillard and Miss Johnston be appointed probationers of the iirst year. 3. That the usual certilicates be issued to the six probationers who passed the examination held on the 22nd ult.—namely, the four named above and Nurses Pill and McFarland. The committee also reported that the cook at the Costley Home having resigned the committee appointed C. Tennu (head cook at the Hospital) in his place at » salary of £100 per year, and promoted Lewis Morris to be head cook at the Hospital at a salary of £100 a year. On the motion of the chairman, the report was adopted. Dr. Collins' Departure.— Dr. Collins wrote asking, the Board to allow him to relinquish his duties at the Hospital a little sooner than was previously decided, and: on the motion of Mr. Lennox, it was decided to grant him six months' leave of absence trom the Ist July next. -'■ The chairman was empowered to close all •business with • Dr. Collins, and stated' tha*t the'doctor sacrificed £100 for board and lodging by going. Increase, of Salary.—The application from Dr. King for an increase of salary was held over till next meeting. Charitable Aid.—John ; Murphy, aged 64, single, was admitted to the Cosfcley Home for three months. The case of William Burns, aged 75, was deferred for the present. Alteration of Rules.—The Board proceeded to consider the proposed rules for the new system of control by an honorary and resideufc medical staff. Amongst other rules, the following were adopted : That the House' Committee consist , of the whole Board and the medical staff, three to form a quorum. That a consultation day in each week be fixed, the whole of the honorary staff to meet and consider cases, in special cases the house surgeon to summon the whole of the staff; that-a regular operating day be fixed; that the resident medical stall'give their whole time to the hospital, and be relieved of all outside work, and that the poor outside and in the |Home be attended to by special man: that the two resident medical officers, who shall be paid, shall be responsible to the honarary-visiting staff for matters medical, but to the Board direct for interna management of hospital affairs. 1 Appointment of Medical Officers.— Mr. Kidd moved, "That- applications for the position of senior resident medical officer be invited by advertisement, the salary tobe £300." Mr. Bollard moved as au amendment, "That'the salary be £350; the assistant surgeon's salary to be £250 instead of £200, as proposed." They wanted really good men, he said, and could afford to pay them. Mr. Dignan said he was quite sure they could get good men for the salaries proposed in the resolution, and with this view Messrs. Kidd and Lennox expressed concurrence. -On being put the amendment was lost, Messrs. Swales and Bollard alone voting in its favour. The'motion was carried.
