Last evening at the Zealandia Rink, S. Armstrong, of Auckland, who recently won the middle-weight championship of Now Zealand from E. Donovan, and T. Williams, Of Christphurch, met in ii glove contest to a finish, for a purse of £50 and the championship. There wore about 200 spectators present, and these elected Mr. Wakefield referee and Mr. Mountain timekeeper. The contest lasted five rounds, and in all of these Armstrong had all tho best of tho fight. Jn tho fourth Williams was knocked down twice, and in the start of the'fifth was driven to the ropes. Armstrong, Who was fresh, punished him severely, , and Williams lay on the ropes apparently much exhausted. At this <=tago the referee ruled that Armstrong struck a foul blow, though to the onlookers no such infringement of the rules was noticeable. This decision, which practically awarded the contest to Williams, was-received with great disfavour, and a considerable amount of clamouring and -hooting took place. Williams left the ring, bub Armstrong's party were very averse to accept the referee's ruling, and issued a number of challoiiigofi to fightagaiiv, bub those Williams' backers failed to accept,. and a very dissatisfied audienoo slowly dispersed. The cry of " Put tho unemployed on the land " ia being raised just now ab Wellington. There ia a caeo well known ab Feild ing of oho'now arrival with a family, who, when ho was landed on hie block, had just 20s in his pocket. To-day .ho--owns his 40 acres, having paid £3 an acre for it; ho delights in garden (Mower and vegotablo), house, orchard v and ho is independent of tho world. This man began life in tho old country as a farm labourer.
