* AUCKLAND V. WELLINGTON. ' The telegraphic match between players Representing Auckland and Wellington . was . resumed on Saturday evening, ' when, as on the first flight, play commenced at seven ■ p.m. and was continued up till-' midnight. As the games now stand, "victory seems to " ' lie with the; Auckland forces, they having already' 1 gained: three . wins against. one liCQved.'by Wellington. Tho Auckland men who have won their games are Messrs. . ' Cozens, Sloman, and Bunyan, while Mr. Asliton has had to succumb to his Wellington opponent,; 1 ; Mr.',* Benbow.r. The announcement of the wins was received with : applause, and the players were heartily congratulated. The following : are spine details-relative to the games '- ■ No. "1. board : Mr. J. B. Malcolm, A., and Mr.' Barnes (captain), W. This game treated a-good deal of interest, throughout the evening. - By an adroit move Mr. Malcolm, who „had previously' lost a piece, ■ secured as- bishop and a rook for a knight, HteSd seemed to have the best of it. At the close of the evening's play, however, Mr. Barnes was moving a piece backwards and •- forwards, apparently with i the intention of compelling a draw. No. 2 board: Mr. A. Ashton, A., and Mr. Benbow, W. ; won by Wellington. Mr. Benbow, by a very strong move of a bishop, forced Mr. Ashton to retire his queen to a . practically useless position, and at the 29th move he announced mate in three. No. 3 board: Mr. W. W. Gome; A., and jvlr. Littlejohn, W. This game' has progressed very evenly. The pieces are-equal, , and neither side appears to have any . advantage. - 1 No. 4 board: Mr. G. Cozens, A., and Mr. Barrand, W. Won by Auckland. Mr. , f ozena, after an overwhelming attack, won Lis' opponent's queen, and secured' the game. * , <n ■ No. 5 board : Mr. E. R. Watkins, A., and Mr. Kelling, W. "Wellington has gained pawn, and a very slight advantage of position. • No. 6 board : Mr. A. Jowetfc, A., and Mr. Bakewell, W. - ■ The pieces are equal, and the game will t likely ?be a protracted - one, ending ultimately ,in a draw. ' * ' No. 7 board : Mr. J. F. Sloman, A., and Mr. Matthews, W. Won by Auckland. The penality for a false movs was exacted against Wellington, and the game . being then hopelessly lost, Mr. Matthews resigned. . ' ' No. 8 board:' Mr. A. Hosking (captain), A., and Mr. McKay, W. Wellington gained a piece oh the first evening., Mr. Hosking has now greatly improved his position, but is scarcely likely to win. No. 9 board Mr. F. 1). VVoodroffe, A., and Mr. Wright, W. Wellington lias,won ; a. knight for a pawn, but Auckland has the stronger position and the best attack. -. , . No. 10 board: Mr. J. Young, A., and Mr. James, W. Mr. Young has lost two nieccs, but the game is far from being over
yet. I No. 11 board: Dr. A. C. Purchas, A., and Mr. /Allen, W. This p;nme has progressed ' very slowly. Auckland has the better position. Mo.. 12 board: Dr. La wry, A., and Mr. Tait, W. Auckland has won a pawn, and the position is such that Dr. La\yry ought certainly to win. * No. 13 board : Mr. Bunyan, A./and Mr. Lambert, W. Won by Auckland. Mr. sacrificed a piece for three pawns, and so gained v a very strong position. Playing a vigorous , game he first won a knight and then his opponent's queen, and - 1 a few moves thereafter Wellington resigned. ■ .• - No. 14 'board : Mr.Miles, A., and Mr. Falkiner, W. Auckland has a slight advantage, and looks like winning. No. 15 board :• Mr. A. Heather, A., and Mr. Turnbull, W. ,; At the close of the first night's play Mr. Heather had a very strong attack.
